AZL White Sox Game Report: 6th inning rally leads to win, updates on Madrigal & Walker

GLENDALE, Ariz – The White Sox bats were kept quiet for most of this game until the sixth inning when they piled on five runs to take the lead and never looked back. Before the sixth, the team had a total of four hits, but during their rally they would string together six consecutively that helped propel them to an 8-5 victory on Sunday night.
2018 29th round draft pick, Taylor Varnell started on the mound for the White Sox. After giving up a solo home run in the first inning, Varnell would settle down and get through five innings of work. The only other mistake Taylor Varnell made in this one was on a throw over to first base after fielding a bunt. The ball ended up in foul territory in the outfield after rattling around, allowing two runners to score.
Aside from that, the Mariners had a tough time catching up to Varnell’s fastball and he fooled a few batters with his off-speeds. He did a good job keeping the ball on the ground and he kept the walks to a minimumas he cruised through the rest of his outing after being tagged for a run early. Final Line: 5.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K.
Outfielder Anderson Comas extended his hit streak to 10 games on Sunday night. He got the scoring started in the sixth with an RBI single on a high chopper that tied the game at 4. He was battling all night in the box as he found himself down in counts early, but continued to make the pitcher work by fouling off pitches.

His swing looks a little long and it seems like he isn’t generating much bat speed, but those are things that can be fixed over time. Comas is very aggressive at the plate and can be a bit of a “free swinger,” but he’s frequently hitting the ball in play and getting on base. He’s seeing a lot of success so far in his time with the AZL affiliate and is a very exciting player to watch.
Anthony Coronado was impressive at the plate tonight as he collected two hits. After his first single, Coronado picked up a stolen base which was the first of the season for him. He’s now reached base in back-to-back games that he’s started in after being hit-less in his previous five games. Here’s a clip where he drove the ball well for an RBI single to trim the Mariners lead to one run.

The previously mentioned sixth inning rally got started with a double by Jose Colina. Following that came five consecutive singles by Comas, Coronado, Brayant Nova (on a beautiful bunt), Camilo Quinteiro, and Micah Coffey who stepped up to the plate as a pinch-hitter. That string of consecutive hits and two wild pitches gave the White Sox a total of five runs in the inning and their first lead of the night. That would be enough for them to maintain their lead in an 8-5 win.
In other news involving the club, I had the opportunity to speak with both Nick Madrigal and AZL White Sox manager, Tommy Thompson. I asked Tommy why Nick was out of the lineup on Saturday. Tommy mentioned that it was simply for Nick to get some rest and to spectate a few games and that’s what he did again on Sunday night. I also asked him when we will be seeing White Sox 2nd round pick, Steele Walker this week. He said probably not, but he’s making progress towards getting back on the field.
When I spoke with Nick directly, I asked him if he knew when he will be heading to Kannapolis. Nick mentioned that they are targeting to send him to Kannapolis later this week and right now they are working on determining if they want to have him play another AZL game before being sent off. They don’t have a specific date on when he will move on, but they want to get it done later this week.
The AZL White Sox will be back in action on Monday, July 9. They will host the Padres and first pitch will be at 9:00 CT.
