A day after selecting Texas high school product Matthew Thompson in the second round, the Chicago White Sox doubled down on Day 2 by selecting another prep arm. This time, it’s California product Andrew Dalquist.
The 6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed pitcher finished his junior year hovering around 90-miles-per-hour on his fastball, but saw a significant increase in velocity his senior year. Coming in ranked the 65th best prospect according to Baseball America and MLB Pipeline, Dalquist goes to the White Sox at pick No. 81 with a slot value of $755,300.
And there goes one of my best available as the @whitesox take Andrew Dalquist

Andrew Dalquist was one of the most impressive prep arms in SoCal this year, in a relatively down year on the high school side. Great athleticism, solid stuff across the board, three-pitch mix. #MLBDraft

White Sox get another high-ceiling prep arm in Andrew Dalquist. Starter traits, touched mid-90’s this spring, CB/CH/strikes all project well

According to MLB Pipeline, Dalquist owns a 60-grade fastball and a plus curveball, offering a four-pitch mix that includes a slider and changeup. Pipeline adds:
Dalquist now operates at 91-93 mph and reaches 95 with the promise of more velocity to come. He uses four-seamers up in the strike zone and two-seamers down at the bottom, with his extension creating deception that stands out more than the life on his heater. He gets good depth on his mid-70s curveball, which should become a consistently solid offering once he adds some more power. Dalquist also has a slider and changeup that he hasn’t used much. He’s athletic and has a whippy arm action that allows him to throw strikes. He still has room to add a lot more strength to his skinny 6-foot-2 frame, so he should continue to gain velocity.
From Prospect Pipeline
The White Sox added depth to the system with their additions of Thompson and now Dalquist. According to experts, Dalquist is another high-ceiling play with room to fill out his 175-pound frame, which could ultimately generate more velocity.
He is committed to Arizona, which could make him a tougher sign. As the rest of the Day 2 picks come in, we could see the White Sox get some easier signs to go underslot and move some of that money to Dalquist.
