The White Sox announced today that amateur scouting director Nick Hostetler will be taking on a new role as special assistant to the GM. A replacement for him has yet to be announced. In his new position, Hostetler will shift his focus to major league scouting. FutureSox reached out to him for comment, but he declined to talk about his new role until his previous position is filled.
Hostetler took over as amateur scouting director in August 2015, managing four drafts for the White Sox. His first round picks include Zack Collins(10) and Zack Burdi (26) in 2016, third baseman Jake Burger (11) in 2017, with the fourth overall pick in 2018, he selected Oregon State second baseman Nick Madrigal and most recently made University of California first baseman Andrew Vaughn the third pick in the 2019 draft. All five remain top prospects in a strong farm system with Madrigal and Vaughn considered on the fast track to the major league roster. He selected 161 total players in his four years on the job.
His early drafts focused heavily on college players and building up a weak farm system. His drafting along with a number of high profile trades netting top talent catapulted the White Sox to a top five farm system. In his last draft, Hostetler changed course snaring high-ceiling high school talent including right-handed pitchers Matthew Thompson, Andrew Dalquist and center fielder James Beard.
