White Sox prospect Andrew Vaughn is in the process of his inaugural Major League spring camp. Yet, it would be easy to mistake him for a seven-year veteran if you’re only halfway paying attention. Through nine games and 21 plate appearances, the Cal product has six hits in 16 at-bats with a home run, two doubles, four walks and two strikeouts.
He’s shown an ability to drive the baseball.
He is also staying true to an approach the other way.
All indications suggest Vaughn is ticketed for Double-A Birmingham to start the season. The big-league Sox is not implausible in the latter part of 2020.
Turning 22 in April, Vaughn is coming off his first professional season where he totaled 55 games across three levels. He totaled 107 games played when considering his time in the Pac-12.
He slashed .278/.384/.449 (.833) in 245 Minor League plate appearances and managed three home runs and eight doubles across 29 games in High-A Winston-Salem – his highest level of competition.
Rick Renteria described Vaughn’s physical approach as, “simple, clean and quick” with not a lot of moving parts in his swing. There is no panic and it is consistent.
Chris Getz in several instances described Vaughn’s approach to hitting as mature. Again, the focus was highlighted by the word: consistent.
Our Arizona correspondent Sean Williams shared in our Patreon exclusive round table conversation that Vaughn is also adjusting well defensively. Sean noted that he’s made a couple notable picks at first base. There is also this highlight.
FutureSox ranked Vaughn as the No. 3 prospect in our preseason ranking behind Luis Robert and Michael Kopech, but he’s really more like No. 1(C). Regardless of my ability to recite the alphabet, the 2019 3rd overall pick will stand alone as the Sox top prospect come midseason.
