The White Sox took on the Rockies at Camelback Ranch on Sunday. The game featured a pitchers’ duel, as both teams struggled offensively throughout the day. Despite the outcome, some of the prospects in the White Sox lineup provided highlights in the loss.
Yermin Mercedes got the start behind the dish. He went hitless on the afternoon. However, he did have a key play defensively. With two outs in the top of the third, the Rockies strung together their first and one of the few threats during the game. Ryan Vilade took off for second base and Mercedes threw him out with a near perfect throw. The throw drew praise from Lucas Giolito, who was pumped that Mercedes helped him get out of the inning.
Micker Adolfo got the start in right field this afternoon. He didn’t see any action in the field, but it was good to see him back out there regardless. At the plate, he grounded out and drew a walk. Timing has been an issue with Adolfo since returning from injury in 2019. It was refreshing to see him more relaxed in the box and take a free pass when he wasn’t given much to hit.
Right-hander Kade McClure pitched in a relief appearance. He was given the loss and was on the mound when the only run crossed the plate this afternoon. The run was unearned, and scored on an error with two outs in the inning. He fell behind hitters a few times, however, he looked pretty good and maintained his perfect ERA this spring. McClure sat 93-94 mph with his fastball and he topped out at 95 mph.
Zack Collins got the start at DH and continued his strong spring with a base hit in two trips.
Taking over after McClure was Tyler Johnson. For Johnson, his spring has gone a little differently thus far. He’s been roughed up and has struggled to throw strikes. On Sunday, he looked much better. He came out of the gates touching 97 mph in what was a scoreless frame. The lone hit he gave up was quickly eliminated by an inning ending double play. Johnson was fired up for the scoreless inning. Hopefully he can use that as momentum to put together some more moving forward.
