The scheduled start of the regular season is less than two weeks away, which means roster decisions are going to start coming fast. The White Sox made more cuts from the spring training roster on Monday.
Outfielder Luis Gonzalez is the most notable name from a prospect perspective. Reynaldo Lopez will be joining him at the alternate site. There still hasn’t been an announcement on where the alternate site will be for the month between the start of the MLB season and the start of the Triple-A season.
In previous roster cuts a week ago, Zack Burdi, Tyler Johnson, Jimmy Lambert, Jonathan Stiever, Bernardo Flores, Blake Rutherford, Gavin Sheets and Seby Zavala were assigned to Triple-A Charlotte. Micker Adolfo and Jake Burger were assigned to Double-A Birmingham.
Andrew Vaughn is still in camp and how his 2021 season will start remains to be seen. Our No. 1 prospect has been one of the best White Sox hitters in spring training and the DH role is still otherwise unfilled. Vaughn is hitting .295/.404/.500 this spring.
There aren’t many other prospect-related roster decisions coming, although the White Sox have created a 40-man roster crunch, which could have a ripple effect. If Vaughn makes the team he would need to be added to the 40-man roster. The 40-man is currently at 40.
Jose Ruiz is out of options, which means he either has to make the Opening Day roster or be placed on waivers. The same goes for the recently signed Nik Turley. Turley is a left-handed reliever who was with the Pirates last year. The 31-year-old went to Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles. That’s the same school as Lucas Giolito and new White Sox pitching coach Ethan Katz.
The season is just around the corner. All these questions will be figured out in the coming days.
