Dominant pitching from Kyle Kubat and Blake Battenfield helped the Birmingham Barons secure a 3-2 victory over the Montgomery Biscuits on Saturday night. The win ends a three-game losing streak for the Barons.
Making his third start of the season, right-hander Blake Battenfield recorded three strikeouts in five innings, only allowing one run on four hits in the process. Battenfield was awarded the win, but from the sixth inning onward, left-hander Kyle Kubat stole the show for the Barons.
Through the final four innings, Kubat struck out seven batters and allowed just one run on three hits. Montgomery couldn’t find a rhythm on offense thanks to Kubat and Battenfield’s pitching, as the Biscuits would finish seven of nine innings scoreless.
While Birmingham’s pitchers shined, the offense was also instrumental in the Barons victory. Left fielder Zack Granite, who finished 0-for-4 at the plate on Friday, hit a solo home run in his first at-bat of the game to give Birmingham an early 1-0 lead.
In the third, Micker Adolfo singled home his first RBI of the contest to extend the Barons’ lead to 2-0. Adolfo would come up clutch once again in the eighth inning, doubling for another RBI to give the Barons a 3-1 lead through eight frames.
Adolfo extended his hitting streak to six games in the victory. He is 11-for-24 (.458) with two doubles, three home runs and eight RBI over that span.
Montgomery was given one final chance to rally in the ninth inning, as Biscuits first baseman Dillon Paulson hit an RBI double to cut the deficit down to 3-2. However, with two outs and one man on base, Ford Proctor would fly out to center field, sealing Birmingham’s first victory since Tuesday.
Six different players recorded hits for the Barons, with Adolfo acting as the lone player to record multiple hits. The Barons improve to 11-6 with the win, and will close out this home series versus the Biscuits on Sunday at 4:00 PM CT.
