Barons explode for 12 runs in blowout victory over Shuckers

The Birmingham Barons, led by White Sox No. 6 prospect Micker Adolfo and left fielder Craig Dedelow, coasted to one of their most impressive wins of the season on Thursday night versus the Biloxi Shuckers. Birmingham would score 12 runs in the victory, marking the team’s fourth-highest scoring total of the season.

After finishing the first two innings scoreless, Laz Rivera and Romy Gonzalez would hit singles in consecutive at-bats to kickstart the Barons’ offense in the third. Micker Adolfo would follow up with a single of his own, scoring Rivera to give Birmingham an early 2-0 lead.

In the next at-bat, first baseman Jameson Fisher doubled on a line drive to right field, scoring both Micker Adolfo and Carlos Perez to extend the Barons’ lead to 4-0. Craig Dedelow would double in one more run to close out an explosive five-run third inning for Birmingham.

Biloxi would score two runs across the third and fourth innings to cut Birmingham’s lead to 5-2. The Shuckers appeared to be gaining momentum, but in the top of the fifth, the Barons decided to halt Biloxi’s momentum in devastating fashion.

To lead off the fifth inning, Romy Gonzalez would reach first base on a single. With Gonzalez at first, Micker Adolfo stepped to the plate and drove in his 13th home run of the season, extending the Barons’ lead back to five runs.

As if Adolfo’s two-run homer wasn’t enough salt in the wound for Biloxi, Craig Dedelow would follow Adolfo’s lead and clobber in a three-run homer of his own just minutes later. The Barons, now leading 10-2, weren’t done scoring yet.

Thanks to an RBI triple from third baseman JJ Muno, two more runs would score for Birmingham to push their lead to 12-2, which would ultimately be the final score for this contest.

While Birmingham’s offense was potent, the club’s pitching staff also deserves credit for this victory. Kade McClure recorded the win for the Barons, recording three strikeouts, five hits, and three earned runs across five innings. Luis Ledo, Andrew Perez, and Peter Tago would pitch the remaining four innings, combining to strike out four batters and allow only one hit.

The Barons were hitting on all cylinders tonight. Four different players recorded two hits, while all nine starters finished with at least one hit. Micker Adolfo (2-for-5) and Craig Dedelow (2-for-5) led the charge for Birmingham, but this victory was a complete team effort.

In other news, Joe DeCarlo, who was assigned to Birmingham from the Triple-A Charlotte Knights on July 6, finished 1-for-4 at the plate in his Barons debut. The 27-year old third-baseman is batting .188 in 48 games played this season.

Regardless of personnel, the Barons may have finally found their rhythm with this victory. After losing three consecutive games heading into this series, Birmingham has now won two of three at MGM Park in Biloxi.

The Barons improve to 30-26 with the win. The fourth game of this series will be played on Friday night at 6:35 PM CT, as Birmingham looks to win their second consecutive game in this road series versus the Shuckers.
