Despite a sluggish start to the season at the major-league level, the White Sox farm system produced plenty of encouraging moments throughout April. No. 14 prospect Yolbert Sanchez’s surge earned him a quick promotion to Triple-A Charlotte, while No. 8 prospect Bryan Ramos obliterated Hi-A pitching and No. 2 prospect Oscar Colás made a successful stateside debut.
Let’s take a dive into the FutureSox MiLB Team of the Month for April 2022:
Catcher: Carlos Pérez (AAA)
.890 OPS, 17 RBI, 131 wRC+
Unranked catcher Carlos Pérez produced impressive numbers in his first full month with Triple-A Charlotte. The 25-year-old backstop posted a team-high 17 RBIs over the course of April and, in remarkable fashion, struck out just once in 84 plate appearances. Pérez belted a career-high 13 home runs last season at Double-A Birmingham and is well on his way to exceeding that mark after he delivered five bombs in April. He profiles as a defense-first backup catcher in the bigs, but it’s encouraging to see consistent results with the bat as well.
First baseman: Alex Destino (AA)
.922 OPS, 2 HR, 154 wRC+
April saw a month of steady production from unranked first baseman Alex Destino. The former South Carolina standout posted a .922 OPS and 154 wRC+ in 13 games with Double-A Birmingham. Destino, 26, hit safely in five of his final six games in April, which included three multi-hit efforts. The 2022 campaign marks his first go-around at the Double-A level.
Second baseman: Yolbert Sánchez (AA/AAA)
.489 OBP, 8 RBI, 155 wRC+
White Sox No. 14 prospect Yolbert Sanchez showed his 2021 production was no fluke as he delivered a dynamic .489 OBP and 155 wRC+ in April. Sanchez, 25, earned a promotion to Triple-A Charlotte on April 26, and proceeded to hit safely in each of his first five games with the Knights. He concluded the month on an 11-game hit streak and has eyes on making his MLB debut in 2022.
Third baseman: Bryan Ramos (A+)
.403 AVG, 1.102 OPS, 195 wRC+
Simply put, it was an incredible month for White Sox No. 8 prospect Bryan Ramos. The 20-year-old third baseman mashed Hi-A pitching to the tune of a 1.102 OPS across 17 games. Ramos batted .403 throughout the month and posted a remarkable 195 wRC+. The Cuban native ended the month on a 15-game hit streak. Ramos showed tremendous promise in his first month with the Dash and is the quickest riser in the system.
Shortstop: Zach Remillard (AAA)
.893 OPS, 12 RBI, 144 wRC+
Unranked shortstop Zach Remillard recorded impressive figures throughout the month of April with Triple-A Charlotte. The 28-year-old infielder, who batted just .193 with the Knights last season, showed significant improvement at the plate and logged a .328 clip in 21 games. Remillard, whom the White Sox selected in the 10th round of the 2016 MLB Draft out of Coastal Carolina, delivered a career-high six RBI with three extra-base hits in the Knights’ 12-5 drubbing of Jacksonville (MIA) on April 28.
Outfielder: Duke Ellis (A+)
1.029 OPS, 5 SB, 179 wRC+
Unranked outfielder Duke Ellis filled the stat sheet in a variety of ways throughout April. The former 20th-round selection torched Hi-A pitching to the tune of a .378 batting average and 1.029 OPS, and his five stolen bases paced Winston-Salem’s club. Ellis, 24, hit safely in nine of his final 10 games in April, which included five multi-hit performances.
Outfielder: Oscar Colás (A+)
.301 AVG, 14 RBI, 128 wRC+
White Sox No. 2 prospect Oscar Colás made his stateside debut in April and showed plenty of promise. The 23-year-old Cuban outfielder, whom the White Sox signed for $2.7 million in January, collected 14 RBI in his first month with Hi-A Winston-Salem. He recorded at least one extra-base hit in four of the final five games of the month. Colás produced seven multi-hit efforts in April.
Outfielder: Tyler Neslony (AA)
1.036 OPS, 12 XBH, 174 wRC+
April marked another stellar month of production from Tyler Neslony. The 28-year-old outfielder posted a 1.036 OPS on the strength of 14 extra-base hits. Neslony, whom the White Sox acquired from the Atlanta Braves in July 2021, recorded seven multi-hit efforts throughout the month. He owns a remarkable 197 wRC+ and 1.110 OPS across 56 games with the Barons dating back to last season.
Starting pitcher: Wes Benjamin (AAA)
23.0 IP, 1.17 ERA, 0.83 WHIP
Former Texas Rangers southpaw Wes Benjamin provided a steady presence on the mound for Triple-A Charlotte throughout the month of April. Benjamin, 28, logged three separate starts of at least six innings. He delivered team-best marks in ERA (1.17), WHIP (0.83), opposing batting average (.173). He also ranked second on the Knights with a 10.17 K/9 rate. Benjamin appeared in 13 games with the Rangers during the 2021 campaign, but signed a minor-league deal with the White Sox in February.
Relief pitcher: Lincoln Henzman (AA)
10.0 IP, 0.90 ERA, 11.70 K/9
Right-handed reliever Lincoln Henzman allowed just one earned run in 10.0 innings of work to earn the Reliever of Month honor for April. Henzman, 26, collected a pair of saves and one hold in six appearances with Double-A Birmingham. Henzman saw his 2020 and 2021 seasons derailed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and injury, but is off to an encouraging start in 2022. The former fourth-round pick ranked second on the Barons (among qualifiers) with an 11.70 K/9 rate in April.
