Tending to the Farm: Oscar Colás’ hot June continues

This series will recap the performances of each White Sox minor league affiliate throughout the previous week. Here is the 12th installment of the 2022 season.

Charlotte Knights (26-46)

Weekly Record: 1-5

The tough times continued for the Knights, this time at the hands of the Worcester Red Sox. Charlotte dropped five of six games as their tough month of June nears its merciful end. The Knights are in last place and 15.5 games back in the International League East Division.

When the weekly OPS and team ERA are within .4 of each other, you can expect that something probably went wrong. Charlotte’s offense was abysmal, leaving Worcester with a .213/.280/.274 slash line and a .554 OPS. Further, they scored 19 runs, had 42 hits in 197 at-bats, four doubles, one triple, two home runs, 17 walks to 58 strikeouts, and went 2-for-5 on stolen bases. Complete season totals for the Knights offense can be found here.

The Knights pitching staff outdid their offensive mates, albeit not by much. Charlotte pitchers left Polar Park with a team ERA of 5.14, a 1.61 WHIP, and a .304 Batting Average Against. They also allowed 28 runs (28 earned), 59 hits to 49 innings pitched, 20 walks to 43 strikeouts, hit four batters, and allowed 10 home runs. Davis Martin: The recently optioned Davis Martin dominated the Woo Sox in his lone appearance. The 25 year-old Martin threw four innings, allowing one hit, no runs, no walks, struck out nine, and had a .077 Batting Average Against with a 0.25 WHIP.

Birmingham Barons (31-38)

Weekly Record: 4-2

Don’t look now, but the Barons have been on a bit of a heater in the month of June. Birmingham hosted the Rocket City Trash Pandas and got the best of the raccoons two thirds of the time even with one of their offensive catalysts (Lenyn Sosa) being promoted to the White Sox earlier in the week. The Barons are in last place and are 10 games back in the Southern League North Division.

The Birmingham bats were productive but unspectacular overall against Trash Pandas pitching last week. Birmingham slashed .278/.359/.404 for a .763 OPS. Additionally, the Barons lineup also scored 30 runs, had 55 hits in 198 at-bats, 11 doubles, one triple, four home runs, 19 walks to 52 strikeouts, and went 13-for-17 on stolen bases. Birmingham’s pitching staff didn’t finish the week with the prettiest looking line, but it was enough to get them past the Trash Pandas more often than not last week. The Barons wrapped the series with a 4.33 team ERA, a 1.50 WHIP, and a .273 Batting Average Against. On top of that, Birmingham allowed 28 runs (26 earned), 56 hits to 54 innings pitched, 25 walks to 51 strikeouts, hit four batters, and allowed three home runs. Tyler Neslony: Tyler Neslony continues to be a consistent force in the Barons lineup. The lefty outfielder slashed .333/.462/.571 for a 1.033 OPS, hit two doubles, one home run, three RBI, scored two runs, went 1-for-1 on stolen bases, and had seven hits in 21 at-bats.

Winston-Salem Dash (36-33)

Weekly Record: 4-2
First Half: 33-33
Second Half: 3-0

The Dash were back home this week hosting the Hudson Valley Renegades, but received reinforcements in the form of 2021 first round pick Colson Montgomery and 19 year-old starter Cristian Mena. The quirkiness of the minor league schedule technically saw Winston-Salem drop two of three to finish the first half of their schedule (Tuesday-Thursday) while sweeping the weekend portion of the series to get the second half of their schedule off on the right foot. The Dash are in first place and a game up in the South Atlantic League South Division.

The Dash boosted their performance from the previous week, but still endured some struggles as a group. Winston-Salem had a .233/.319/.328 slash line and a .647 OPS. The Dash scored 23 runs, had 44 hits in 189 at-bats, seven doubles, one triple, three home runs, 22 walks to 44 strikeouts, and went 4-for-5 on stolen bases. Dash pitching was dealing against the Hudson Valley lineup. Winston-Salem ended the series with team ERA of 2.33, a 1.17 WHIP, and a .236 Batting Average Against. The Dash allowed 18 runs (14 earned) on 48 hits over 54 innings, 15 walks to 51 strikeouts, hitting one batter and allowing seven home runs. Oscar Colas: The month of June has been very kind to Oscar Colas, as he continues to swing a hot bat for the Dash. The 23 year-old slashed .522/.577/.739 for a 1.316 OPS, had two doubles, one home run, four RBI, scored four runs, and had 12 hits in 23 at-bats.

Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (28-41)

Weekly Record: 2-4
First Half: 26-40
Second Half: 2-1

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans came to visit the Cannon Ballers to wrap up the first and kick off the second half of the Carolina League schedule. The Ballers lost the series and finished the first half sluggishly, dropping all three weekday games, however they did win two of three in the weekend set to kick off the second half. Kannapolis is tied for first place in the Carolina League South Division.

After enduring a long rut, the Kannapolis offense showed some signs of life last week. The Ballers concluded the week with a .249/.381/.411 slash line and a .792 OPS. The Ballers also scored 31 runs, had 49 hits in 197 at-bats, 10 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 37 walks to 62 strikeouts, and went 9-for-11 on stolen bases. The Kannapolis pitching staff suffered a bit of a setback against the Carolina League leading Pelicans. The Cannon Ballers left the series with a team ERA of 5.56, a 1. 53 WHIP, and a .242 Batting Average Against. Correspondingly, they allowed 36 runs (34 earned) on 51 hits over 55 innings, issuing 33 walks against 53 strikeouts, while hitting four batters and allowing seven home runs. Tommy Sommer: Tommy Sommer had a fantastic start against Myrtle Beach last week. The 23 year-old lefty threw six innings, allowing four hits, one run, one walk, struck out eight, had a .182 Batting Average Against and a 0.83 WHIP.

ACL White Sox (6-9)

Weekly Record: 0-5

The third week of the ACL season is one that the club would love to forget, as they dropped all five of their games this week. The ACL White Sox are tied for last place and four games back in the ACL West. Full standings of the ACL can be found here.

The third week of the season saw the ACL White Sox endure some offensive struggles. The club slashed .239/.320/.371 for a .691 OPS. Additionally, the ACL White Sox scored 21 runs, had 38 hits in 159 at-bats, seven doubles, one triple, four home runs, 18 walks to 70 strikeouts, and went 6-for-7 on stolen bases. The ACL White Sox pitching staff once again struggled on the bump. The staff wrapped up the week with a team ERA of 6.31, a 1.62 WHIP, and a .253 Batting Average Against. In addition, the staff was charged with 29 earned runs to 39 runs allowed, 42 hits in 41.1 innings pitched, 25 walks to 55 strikeouts, hit two batters, and allowed three home runs. Dylan Burns: Dylan Burns had himself very strong showings for the ACL Sox last week. In two appearances (one start), the 25-year-old threw 11.1 innings, allowing seven hits, two earned runs, one hit batter, no walks, struck out 21, and had a .171 Batting Average Against with a 0.62 WHIP.

Honorable Mentions: Javier Mora and Johnabiell Laureano

DSL White Sox (10-7)

Weekly Record: 3-3

With the DSL Sox playing a Wednesday game last week (generally an off day for the lone White Sox DSL team), the team worked a split of the six scheduled games. The DSL White Sox are in third place in the DSL San Pedro Division. Full standings of the DSL can be found here.

The DSL White Sox offense continued their hot start to the season with another fantastic week. The DSL Sox wrapped up their six games of the week with a .306/.396/.523 slash line, a .919 OPS, 38 runs scored, 59 hits in 193 at-bats, eight doubles, two triples, 10 home runs, 29 walks to 52 strikeouts, and went 8-for-13 on stolen bases. The DSL White Sox pitching staff did not have the same fortune as the offense did. The staff finished their week with a team ERA of 5.18, a 1.62 WHIP, .246 Batting Average Against, 28 earned runs to 38 runs allowed, 47 hits to 48.2 innings pitched, 32 walks to 52 strikeouts, hit one batter, and allowed six home runs. Godwin Bennett: Godwin Bennett was raking for the DSL White Sox last week. Playing in all six games, the 19 year-old hit .300/.375/.950 for a 1.325 OPS. Bennet also scored six runs, hit one double, four home runs, had seven RBI, went 1-for-1 on stolen bases, and had six hits across 20 at-bats.

    It’s so shocking to see Charlotte at 20 games under .500. I know we’ll have 50 posts explaining how it’s all TLR’s fault somehow but even then it’s still shocking. Add to it Birmingham, Kannapolis, and ACL all being sub .500 and you go from shocked to depressed quickly. On the plus side, Charlotte’s -93 run differential is not the worst in AAA.

    2. Right Size Wrong Shape

      It’s not really shocking considering their pitching staff consists of Davis Martin and a bullpen.

      In Charlotte’s defense, who’s the highest-profile player that’s not 1) injured or 2) spent time on the big league roster or 3) both.

      Their season probably looks a lot different if Hahn signs a RF an 2B and Keuchel doesn’t mess himself so Sheets, Mendick, and Burger are regulars in the lineup and Banks and Martin are qualifying pitchers.
