Tending to the Farm: Jared Kelley stymies Columbia

This series will recap the performances of each White Sox minor league affiliate throughout the previous week. Here is the 17th installment of the 2022 season.

Charlotte Knights (36-63)

Weekly Record: 2-4

The Knights wrapped up their road trip with a stop in Nashville. The Sounds were able to get the better of Charlotte four times out of six while also taking the series. The Knights occupy last place and are 18 games back in the International League East Division.

Once again the Knights had poor offensive results against Sounds pitchers. Charlotte held a .251/.307/.324 slash line and a .631 OPS. They also scored 19 runs, had 52 hits in 207 at-bats, seven doubles, one triple, two home runs, 14 walks to 40 strikeouts, and went 10-for-10 on stolen bases. Complete season totals for the Knights offense can be found here.

Charlotte’s pitching was much better than last week, but was still not great. The Knights had a team ERA of 5.22, a 1.58 WHIP, and a .237 Batting Average Against. They also allowed 30 runs (29 earned), 45 hits to 50 innings pitched, 34 walks to 51 strikeouts, hit three batters and allowed seven home runs. Mark Payton: Mark Payton held the honor of being the best Charlotte Knight performer last week. The 30 year-old St. Rita product slashed .375/.423/.583 for a 1.006 OPS, hit three doubles. one triple, six RBI, scored three runs, went 1-for-1 on stolen bases and had nine hits in 24 at-bats.

Birmingham Barons (45-51)

Weekly Record: 3-3
First Half: 31-38
Second Half: 14-13

Birmingham was taking on the Tennessee Smokies last week in Tennessee. This was a very evenly matched series, with both teams winning three games. The Barons are tied for second place and one game back in the second half in the Southern League North Division.

The Birmingham offense rebounded after a tough prior week. The Barons slashed .248/.356/.448 for an .804 OPS. Additionally, they scored 39 runs, had 52 hits in 210 at-bats, 13 doubles, one triple, nine home runs, 27 walks to 62 strikeouts, and went 15-for-15 on stolen bases. The Barons pitchers had a mediocre week on the mound against the Smokies lineup. Birmingham had a 4.76 team ERA, a 1.49 WHIP, and a .272 Batting Average Against. The Barons also allowed 28 runs (27 earned), 55 hits to 51 innings pitched, 21 walks to 53 strikeouts, hit five batters and allowed five home runs. Craig Dedelow: Craig Dedelow made sure to pack his power bat when the Barons went on this roadtrip. The 27 year-old slashed .300/.375/.900 for a 1.275 OPS, hit four home runs, eight RBI, scored four runs, went 1-for-1 on stolen bases and had six hits in 20 at-bats.

Winston-Salem Dash (46-50)

Weekly Record: 2-4
First Half: 33-33
Second Half: 13-17

Winston-Salem took a trip to Greensboro to play the stream-less Grasshoppers. The series didn’t quite work out as the Dash had hoped, as they dropped four of six in the series. The Dash are in fifth place and six games back in the second half in the South Atlantic League South Division.

The Dash offense was able to build upon last week and improve their overall numbers. Winston-Salem slashed .258/.379/.402 for a .781 OPS. The Dash also scored 33 runs, had 54 hits in 209 at-bats, six doubles, no triples, eight home runs, 30 walks to 59 strikeouts, and went 5-for-7 on stolen bases. Dash pitching turned back into a pumpkin last week against the Grasshopper lineup. Winston-Salem had a team ERA of 6.58, a 1.76 WHIP, and a .292 batting average against. The Dash also allowed 49 runs (39 earned) on 64 hits over 53.1 innings, 30 walks to 48 strikeouts, hitting one batter and allowing a staggering 17 home runs. Ben Norman: Ben Norman once again takes the honors, narrowly edging out Bryan Ramos. The 24 year-old outfielder slashed .440/.500/.720 for a 1.220 OPS, hit one double, two home runs, seven RBI, scored four runs, and had 11 hits in 25 at-bats.

Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (44-52)

Weekly Record: 3-3
First Half: 26-40
Second Half: 18-12

Kannapolis hosted the Columbia Fireflies, in a battle for the division lead. The Ballers and Fireflies played a tight series, both winning three games apiece. Kannapolis is in first place and a half game up in the second half in the Carolina League South Division.

The Cannon Ballers offense was solid last week against Columbia pitching. Kannapolis had a .271/.353/.424 slash line for a .777 OPS. Kannapolis also scored 30 runs, had 55 hits in 203 at-bats, six doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 21 walks to 53 strikeouts, and went 4-for-4 on stolen bases. Kannapolis pitching had themselves a pretty solid week against the Fireflies. The Ballers posted a team ERA of 3.86, a 1.14 WHIP, and a .228 Batting Average Against. In addition, they allowed 26 runs (24 earned) on 46 hits over 56 innings, issuing 18 walks against 52 strikeouts, while hitting two batters and allowing three home runs. Jared Kelley: Jared Kelley was outstanding en route to getting his first professional win. The 20 year-old righty went five innings, allowing one hit, no runs, two walks, struck out eight, and had a .063 Batting Average Against and a 0.60 WHIP.

ACL White Sox (15-23)

Weekly Record: 2-3

The ACL White Sox endured another tough week with the club dropping three of their five games last week. The ACL White Sox are in last place and 13 games back in the ACL West. Full standings of the ACL can be found here.

The ACL White Sox offense had better output than the previous week, but not by much. The club hit .197/.280/.306 for a .586 OPS. Additionally, the ACL White Sox scored 17 runs, had 29 hits in 147 at-bats, three doubles, two triples, three home runs, 12 walks to 62 strikeouts, and went 1-for-3 on stolen bases. The ACL White Sox pitching staff had themselves a pretty successful week on the mound. The staff finished the week with a team ERA of 3.60, a 1.38 WHIP, and a .245 Batting Average Against. In addition, the staff was charged with 16 earned runs (16 runs allowed), 37 hits in 40 innings pitched, 18 walks to 44 strikeouts, hit four batters, and allowed five home runs. Cameron Butler: Cameron Butler was more than solid in Arizona last week. The 19-year-old outfielder slashed .273/.429/.636 for a 1.065 OPS, hitting one double, one home run, three RBI, scored three runs, and had three hits in 11 at-bats.

DSL White Sox (21-20)

Weekly Record: 4-2

The DSL White Sox saw action in six games last week, winning four of the matchups and helped get them back over .500 for the season. The DSL squad is in sixth place and five games back in the DSL San Pedro Division. Full standings of the DSL can be found here.

The offense once again led the charge for the DSL White Sox. The Dominican crew hit .303/.402/.482 for an .884 OPS. In addition, the club scored 44 runs, had 59 hits in 195 at-bats, 11 doubles, three triples, six home runs, 27 walks to 50 strikeouts, and went 10-for-15 on stolen bases. Contrary to the offense, the DSL White Sox pitching staff was quite terrible last week. The staff held a team ERA of 8.27, a 1.73 WHIP, and a .296 Batting Average Against. The DSL squad also allowed 45 earned runs to 51 runs allowed, 58 hits to 49 innings pitched, 27 walks to 42 strikeouts, hit five batters, and allowed nine home runs. Carlos Jimenez: Carlos Jimenez smoked the ball all of last week for the DSL Sox. The 20 year-old slashed .348/.385/.783 for a 1.168 OPS, one double, three home runs, 10 RBI, scored four runs, and had eight hits in 23 at-bats.
