Trending on the Farm: Sosa is scorching

This series will highlight player trends from the top prospects in the White Sox system as well as any other notable performances across all affiliates. The second installment covers the first full week for Charlotte as well as the opening weekend for the other three full season affiliates.

Top of the Crop

NOTE: This piece will focus on players in the minor leagues, so Oscar Colás is omitted as he’s with the White Sox.

Colson Montgomery

Colson Montgomery was placed on the 7-day IL to open up the 2023 season with an oblique issue. Unfortunately for the rest of his Winston-Salem teammates in the top of the crop (Vera and Cannon), inclement weather postponed two of three games vs Hickory.

Lenyn Sosa:

Lenyn Sosa followed up his solid start at Charlotte with an excellent first full week, homering twice, knocking in eight, and also had five walks to three strikeouts. The 23 year old also made some nice defensive plays just for good measure.

José Rodriguez

The hitting machine also known as Popeye picked up right where he left off for the Barons, knocking four hits including a home run in his first two games of the season. Fellow top-cropper and Baron teammate Bryan Ramos hopes to return to action this week after being sidelined by a sore groin for opening weekend.

Cristian Mena

The stat line for the 20 year old doesn’t tell the full tale of Mena’s outing. Mena displayed some excellent breaking and off-speed stuff, routinely fooling Tennessee hitters. He did get into some trouble in the fifth and was pulled (the two baserunners he allowed later scored), but it was an encouraging display from the righty playing against (on average) competition nearly 4.5 years his senior.

Peyton Pallette

Peyton Pallette made his professional debut during opening weekend, striking out three Wood Ducks. Down East doesn’t have a video feed in the year 2023, but there is some backfield video from this year available if you’d like to get a glimpse.

Best of the Rest

Luis Mieses

Luis Mieses batted .636/.538/.818 for a 1.356 OPS with one run scored in three games (11 ABs), two doubles, and three RBI, including going 4-4 on opening night for the Barons.

Yoelqui Céspedes

Yoelqui Céspedes had a nice start for the Barons as well, batting .364/.462/.727 for a 1.189 OPS with two runs scored in three games (11 ABs), one double, one home run, three RBI, and went 2-for-2 on stolen bases.

Alejandro Mateo

Alejandro Mateo was solid in both of his appearances last weekend, throwing three innings and striking out six batters (to just one hit and walk allowed).

Jake Marisnick

Jake Marisnick had a nice week at the plate batting .286/.474/.429 for a .903 OPS, two runs scored, hit two doubles, and went 3-for-4 on stolen bases.

Tyler Schweitzer

In his professional debut, lefty Tyler Schweitzer went five innings allowing three hits, two runs (two earned), walking one while striking out six Wood Ducks.

Tim Elko

Tim Elko homered and knocked in three in two games against Down East, finishing the brief two game set (one game was rained out) with a 1.158 OPS.
