2023 MLB Draft prospect Dillon Head at a glance

Dillon Head is widely considered a top-50 prospect in the 2023 MLB draft. A senior at Homewood-Flossmoor High School in the Chicagoland area, Head is committed to play at Clemson University come fall. He showcases plus-plus speed and an ability to play a strong center field.

Head bats and throws left-handed. Perfect Game lists him at 6-foot, 180 pounds. The local product has added size since his 2022 Perfect Game All-American Classic performance.

I, as well as no fewer than 15 pro scouts, was in attendance at Ozinga Field for HF’s contest against Amos Alonzo Stagg High School on April 13, 2023.

OBSERVATIONS

Speed.

In four plate appearances, Head reached base via walk and an infield single. In his first at-bat, Head struck out swinging, but reached second base on a dropped third strike. He then stole third without a throw. A few pitches later, Head scored easily on a passed ball.

Later, following his lone hit in the contest, Head stole second and third without much of a threat of being caught. The 18-year-old clearly separated himself from his peers, as his freakishly athletic build was on display cutting down distances with ease.

Head sprinted up the first base line on two occasions and were both unofficially clocked in at 3.90 seconds (4.1 seconds is considered above-average for left-handed hitters).

DEFENSE

This is a centerfielder who should remain at the position whether he elects to play at Clemson or signs with a professional organization.

On every occasion, Head’s first step was correct. He played a ball perfectly off the wall that was hit on a line over his head. In another instance, Head got caught in-between a sinking line drive that only could have been caught on a dive had he not exhibited a moment of hesitation.

Each throw was quickly relayed in and right on target. He displayed average arm strength.

Overall, it’s clear Head commands the outfield in center and covers the gaps like a professional.

CONCERNS

Head has a frame that suggests power should be part of his game, but inconsistent swing habits prohibit massive gains in that regard. He is susceptible to getting beat by changeups, too.

In order for Head to reach his high-upside potential, he must find common ground in his swing path, which starts with his hands and lower half.
