*crickets chirping*

There’s no update on Montgomery. Ramos was supposed to be back “soon” two weeks ago, but has yet to be activated.

Oscar Colás

Oscar Colás continues to swing a hot bat for the Knights, following up the previous week’s 1.171 OPS with a 1.096 OPS and a handful of extra base hits against Durham.

Noah Schultz & Norge Vera

While things are still quiet on the Norge Vera front, Noah Schultz is reportedly throwing in Arizona.

Lenyn Sosa

Lenyn Sosa was optioned back to Charlotte and appeared in two games for the Knights, slugging a home run against the Durham Bulls.

Peyton Pallette

Peyton Pallette had a nice bounce-back start against Fayetteville after being unable to make it out of the first inning in his previous start. The five strikeouts and four innings pitched he had in this start are both season highs.

Sean Burke

Control issues and ineffectiveness continue to plague Sean Burke. Walks and hits keep piling up during his abbreviated starts.

José Rodriguez & Cristian Mena

The rough beginning to the season for Popeye got worse last week, as he was only able to muster two hits in 26 ABs against Pensacola, but did go 2-for-2 in stolen bases.

Cristian Mena had an uncharacteristically rough start versus the Blue Wahoos, where he was unable to make it out of the third inning and allowed three runs for the first time since his first start of the season.

Best of the Rest

Clint Frazier & Erik González

Clint Frazier followed up a three homer, 1.980 OPS week with a very solid 1.278 OPS with five extra base hits (four doubles, one home run).

Erik González had a nice week for the Knights, homering once and ending the week with a 1.056 OPS

Nate Fisher

Nate Fisher was outstanding in his start against Durham, limiting the Bulls to just one hit and one run allowed (unearned) while striking out seven over 5.1 innings.

Taylor Snyder & Adam Hackenberg

Taylor Snyder smacked two home runs and four RBI en route to a 1.313 OPS last week against Pensacola.

Adam Hackenberg hit one double, one home run, and had three RBI while ending the week with a .308/.438/.615 slash line and a 1.053 OPS.

Alsander Womack

Alsander Womack has been performing well since his promotion to Birmingham two weeks ago. Last week, Womack hit one home run, knocked in four, and had 10 total hits on the week with a .417/.481/.542 triple slash and a 1.023 OPS.

DJ Gladney

The hot spring of DJ Gladney continued against Greenville last week. Gladney smashed four extra base hits (two 2B, 3B, HR) in 18 ABs, four RBI, and a .333/.400/.722 triple slash for a 1.122 OPS.

Jonathan Cannon

Jonathan Cannon followed up his superb outing in the previous week with another highly effective outing last week. The full stat line is in the tweet below, but Cannon has only allowed one run and a 0.64 WHIP over 14 innings in his last two starts combined.

Bryce Willits

After posting a 1.371 OPS in the previous week, Willits posted another strong line, batting .444/.545/.778 for a 1.323 OPS, three extra base hits (2B, 3B, HR), five RBI, and went 1-for-1 on stolen bases.

Connor McCullough

Connor McCullough followed up his fantastic outing in the previous week by throwing six innings of three hit ball against Fayetteville. McCullough once again didn’t allow any runs and also struck out seven.

SHANE MURPHY

Shane Murphy continues to throw the ball well for the Cannon Ballers. The southpaw threw five scoreless innings without allowing a hit, struck out three and walked one.

Tyler Schweitzer

Tyler Schweitzer was yet another Cannon Ballers starter that stymied the Woodpeckers lineup last week. Schweitzer’s full stat line is below.

Drew McDaniel

Drew McDaniel was the final piece of the dominant Ballers starting pitching last week. As mentioned below, McDaniel only allowed one baserunner before an error eventually saw an unearned run come around to score.

  1. Im curious, is the success Winston-Salem is seeing and to an extent Kannapolis a product of better player dev, better player evaluation, or just older/experienced players handling business with a massive jump in AA? Want to properly understand the context of whats happening so I dont get excited over prospects who may end up being nothing more than system guys as they progress….like most White Sox prospects that come through

    1. I don’t see anyone there who’s a must keep. I think Cannon may be the closest to that. It gives hope that there’s something we can trade with, though this year should be a lost cause.

So at least for Kannapolis, they definitely have a group of players there that are older than the average age (average age of hitters/pitchers in the Carolina League is 20.9/21.7, Kanny is 22.5/22.4). I’d say they’re doing what they should be doing at the level, and I’d expect a good majority of those guys to get bumped up to WS soon enough where they’d be more “age appropriate”. At that point it’ll be easier to get a better grasp on what’s real and what’s not. I’d like to believe it’s better player dev/eval that’s leading the charge of success in A/A+, but I remain skeptical until given a reason not to be.

For Winston, the average age are more in line with the league (SAL avg hitter pitchers 22.4/23.2, WS avg 22.6/23.5) so I’m more bullish on performances there by guys like Chapelli, Veras, Gladney, & Cannon.

TL;DR version: it’s fair to have “your guys” in the lower levels, but just pay attention to age vs competition, and approach prospect love in lower levels with caution.

  2. SEAN BURKE

Control issues and ineffectiveness continue to plague Sean Burke. Walks and hits keep piling up during his abbreviated starts.

Ineffective and with control issues? He’s ready. Call him up.

    1. a 2.108 WHIP. I had to double check to see if you had linked to Alec Hansen by mistake. Ugh.

  3. Sleepy, who top 10 is this? And when do you think Cannon will replace Vera on it?

    1. Sleepy Harold

It’s the cumulative FutureSox top 10. The next update should be the midseason list (post draft) so that’s when I’d expect the changes to come in.
