After winning six straight, the Knights streak came to an end, but two top prospects remained hot. Top pitching prospects Tyler Danish and Spencer Adams put together very impressive starts, while both earning well deserved wins.
Durham 7, Charlotte 4
Chris Volstad got the start for the Knights, but struggled in his five innings of work. He fell to 2 and 3 on the season, as he gave up five runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts. The lone bright spot on the mound came from Michael Ynoa, as he fired two scoreless innings while giving up just one hit and punching out two. At the plate, the Knights had 14 hits, but only had four runs on the night. Tim Anderson has yet to cool off, as he hit his third home run in as many games. After a slow start to the season, Anderson is now hitting .295 and is showing off some solid power from the lead off spot as of late. Anderson is not the only one who has been red hot, as Matt Davidson had another great game at the plate. After belting two home runs in last night’s game, he followed that up tonight by going 3 for 5 with three doubles and two RBIs. Davidson also got off to a slow start offensively, but now is up to a .265 batting average, a respectable level for him for the first time in over two years. Leury Garcia stood out offensively as well, as he had three hits including an inside the park the home run, his second of the season. He is now hitting an impressive .333 in 86 at bats this season. Jason Coats had a pair of hits as well, and raised his batting average to .320.
The rubber match between the Knights and Bulls will take place tomorrow afternoon, as Erik Johnson is set to make the start.
Birmingham 11, Tennessee 1
Tyler Danish turned in a very impressive eight innings of work for the Barons while earning his third win of the season. He gave up just one run on four hits while striking out four, and lowered his ERA to 3.71. Robin Leyer threw a scoreless ninth in relief and punched out two. There were multiple contributors for the Barons offensively, as Joey DeMichele led the way with the home run and four RBIs. Nick Delmonico also showed off some power, as he went 2 for 5 with a home run, his fifth of the season. Other notables were Trey Michalczewski, who had a double and three RBIs, and Eudy Pina who had two doubles and two runs scored on the night.
Southpaw Jordan Guerrero takes the hill tomorrow afternoon game two of a five game set with the Smokies.
Winston-Salem 4, Potomac 2
Spencer Adams had his best start of his season, as he fired off an impressive eight innings while earning his fourth win. On the night, he gave up two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts. After struggling in his last start, it was great to see him back on track and earn the win. Jacob Morris came on in the ninth and threw a scoreless inning, and earned his second save of the season. At the plate, Hunter Jones was a major force, as he had three hits, including his fourth triple of the season. Third baseman Gerson Montilla had two singles and a run scored on the night, while Keon Barnum, Toby Thomas, and Cleuluis Rondon each had a hit as well.
Brandon Brennan makes the start against the Nationals tomorrow afternoon, as the Dash look to win their third game in a row.
Hagerstown 10, Kannapolis 3
Johnathan Frebis started for the Intimidators, but struggled from the get go and lasted just 2.2 innings. He gave up six runs (five earned) on just three hits, but most of his trouble came from the five free passes he issued. It was not a game to remember on the mound for the Intimidators, outside of Jack Charleston, who threw 2.1 scoreless innings and struck out one. Offensively, Grant Massey and Danny Mendick both had multi-hit games, while catcher Daniel Gonzalez had a hit and two RBIs.
The Intimidators look to avoid the sweep as they square off tomorrow afternoon with the Suns. Luis Martinez will make his eighth start of the season.
