Pawtucket 7, Charlotte 4
Starter Jacob Turner surrendered seven runs on thirteen hits and the Charlotte offense didn’t have an extra base hit as the Knights dropped the opening game of the series. Reliever Blake Smith was able to keep the Knights in the game by blanking the Red Sox over the remaining 2.1 innings.
Former MVP Justin Morneau made his 2016 debut and went 0-2 at DH. Speedy outfielder Tony Campana led the offense by going 2-4 and Jake Peter went 1-3 with a walk.
The Knights will be looking for revenge as they send Chris Volstad to the mound on Tuesday,
Chattanooga 11, Birmingham 5
Jordan Guerrero could not escape the 5th inning in a start he would like to forget. Guerrero gave up seven runs on nine hits and three walks before being pulled for reliever Matt Cooper. Cooper uncharacteristically struggled as well, giving up an earned run on two hits and three walks.
The Barons offense was buoyed by the long ball, as Brady Shoemaker and Keon Barnum went yard. Catcher Alfredo Gonzalez went 1-3 with a walk in his White Sox debut after being acquired from the Houston Astros.
Winston-Salem 8, Myrtle Beach 0
Jordan Stephens is officially on fire and had his best start of the season against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Featuring a brand new sinker, Stephens struck out nine batters over six scoreless innings while allowing just three hits and two walks. Over his last four starts (24.2 innings), Stephens has only allowed one earned run and struck out 32 batters to 9 walks.
Stephen’s catcher Brett Austin gave his pitcher all the run support he would need by going 3-4 with two doubles and three runs driven in. Nick Basto went 2-4 with a double and Gerson Montilla punctuated the victory with a solo home run.
Spencer Adams will take the mound on Tuesday, looking for his eighth victory of the season.
Kannapolis 8, Hagerstown 2
The 31-51 Kannapolis Intimidators turned the tables on the 50-32 Hagerstown Suns for the victory on Monday. Starter Luis Martinez struck out six over six innings, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks. The Intimidators bullpen took it from there, as Ian Hamilton fired two scoreless innings and Dylan Barrow worked around a hit to register a scoreless 9th. Hamilton, a 2016 11th round pick, has not been scored upon yet over his first six professional innings.
The White Sox snatched up first baseman K.J. Woods when he was released from the Marlins organization and he has been rewarding that decision thus far. Woods went 3-5 with a home run and is now hitting .279/.380/.535 over his first twelve games with the Intimidators. Micker Adolfo recorded his third consecutive multi-hit game as he went 2-4 with a strikeout. Second baseman Bradley Strong homered for the fourth time in seven games.
Johnathan Frebis gets the start against the Suns on Tuesday as the Intimidators hope to continue rolling.
Missoula 9, Great Falls 7 (12 innings)
Down 6-2 in the bottom of the 8th, catcher Casey Schroeder blasted a three-run home run and later in the same inning outfielder Alex Call gave the Voyagers the lead with a two-run shot. The home run highlighted a fantastic night for Call, as he went 2-4 with two walks. Unfortunately, the lead provided by Call evaporated in the top of the 9th as Brandon Magallones gave up his first earned run of the season. The Missoula Ospreys eventually pushed across two more runs in the 12th inning to take the game.
The back-and-forth contest was started by Yosmer Solorzano, who (by his standards) struggled, allowing two earned runs on eight hits and one walk over 5.1 innings. The Great Falls defense didn’t do Solorzano or any of the other pitchers any favors, as they committed five errors.
Aron McRee will take the mound on Tuesday as the Voyagers will be looking to even the series against Missoula.
