Gwinnett 15, Charlotte 3
The Knights got absolutely destroyed by the Gwinnett Braves and there isn’t a lot that was fun about this game from a White Sox perspective. Starter Scott Carroll gave up four runs on six hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. Tyler Danish relieved Carroll and threw gas on the fire by allowing six runs over an inning and a third. Danish was respectable over twelve AA Birmingham starts (4.42), but his time in Charlotte has been rough, as he currently sports a 12.71 ERA over 11.1 innings. Reliever Blake Smith threw 1.2 scoreless innings before Matt Purke allowed five more runs to score over his 1.1 innings.
Rehabbing Justin Morneau went 1-4 with a triple and a strikeout. The triple is a bit unusual for Morneau, who isn’t known for his speed. Outfielder Slade Heathcott also tripled and Jerry Sands went 1-2 with two walks.
The Knights will try to regroup on Friday by sending out Anthony Ranaudo to face off against the Braves.
Chattanooga 10, Birmingham 4
Starter David Holmberg struggled and was knocked out of the game with one out in the 4th inning after allowing six runs to score. Reliever Matt Cooper came on and allowed four runs (three earned) to score over 2.2 innings. Cooper was fantastic as a starter in Winston-Salem, but has now allowed runs to score over his last three appearance out of the bullpen with the Barons. Brian Clark was able to stop the bleeding, tossing two scoreless innings to end the game.
Catcher Alfredo Gonzalez seems to be enjoying his time thus far with the White Sox organization, he went 2-3 with a walk and is hitting .556/.692 over three games as a Baron. Shortstop Eddy Alvarez hit his fourth home run of the season in the 5th inning and the speedy Adam Engel went 1-4 with a triple and a walk.
James Dykstra will get the start on Friday looking for his third win of the season.
Winston-Salem 13, Myrtle Beach 9
The Dash scored in every inning except the 2nd and 3rd as they won a slugfest over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Every member of the lineup recorded at least one hit and four players had three on the evening. Outfielder Nick Basto went 3-4 with a double and a walk and Mason Robbins also went 3-4 with a double and added a stolen base. Hunter Jones went 2-4 with a double and an incredible catch in center field. The video of that catch is below and is definitely worth a watch.
Starter Tanner Banks was the recipient of all that run support and he earned the win by allowing four runs over 5.2 innings.
Thad Lowry will take them mound in the series opener against the Frederick Keys.
Greensboro 5, Kannapolis 2
Brannon Easterling pitched a strong game, only allowing two runs over six innings, but the usually steady Tanner Mendonca allowed Greensboro to take the lead and the game. The loss snapped a five game winning streak for the Intimidators. Outfielder Landon Lassiter provided the only runs Kannapolis would score with one swing of his bat. Lassiter launched his 2nd home run of the season in the 6th inning, scoring Tyler Sullivan and knotting the game at two. K.J. Woods went 1-3 with a walk and Sullivan went 0-1 but walked twice.
The Intimidators will attempt to begin a new winning streak as Max Beatty takes the mound on Friday.
Great Falls 6, Billings 1
2016 7th round pick Bernardo Flores threw four innings and only allowed one unearned run to score and the Great Falls offense took care of the rest for the win on Thursday. Flores made three relief appearance for the AZL White Sox but made his first career start for Great Falls. Flores start was cemented by scoreless relief appearances by Fernando Gallegos, Lane Hobbs, and Richard McWilliams.
It was an all around stellar night for the 2016 draft class as Alex Call and Jameson Fisher each went 1-3 with a walk and Brady Conlan blasted his third home run of the short season. However, shortstop Mitch Roman had the best night, as he went 2-2 with two walks for a perfect night at the plate. The 2016 12th rounder is hitting .367/.444/.500 over his first 17 professional games.
AZL Brewers 7, AZL White Sox 3
The AZL Sox pounded out 12 hits, but could only convert them into three runs as they dropped a Thursday evening contest to the Brewers. A couple of LatAm signings led the way, shortstop Amado Nunez went 3-5 and Felix Mercedes went 3-4. Outfielder Joel Booker also had a nice night from the leadoff position, going 2-5 with a double and a triple. Catcher Zack Collins went 0-4 with two strikeouts in his second professional game.
DSL Blue Jays 8, DSL White Sox 1
