White Sox affiliates underwent a system sweep yesterday. Poor pitching plagued the system despite Birmingham and Winston-Salem having strong nights on offense. Adam Engel continues to stay hot since his return to Double-A and down in Rookie Ball, Corey Zangari helped the Great Falls Voyagers from being no hit.
Jacksonville 11, Birmingham 8
Barons starter Tyler Barnette had an outing to forget as he got the loss behind a dismal performance. He gave up five earned runs and nine hits in just three innings pitched. Matt Cooper relieved him and went four innings, but surrendered another three runs to go along with four strikeouts. Adam Engel and Eddy Alvarez paced the offense, with Engel going 2-for-5 with a triple and run scored while Alvarez went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Trey Michalczewski went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, but that trio of strong showings wasn’t enough to overcome Birmingham’s pitching woes.
Barons starter David Holmberg will try to right the ship this evening against Jacksonville.
Frederick 11, Winston-Salem 7
Zachary Thompson had a rough first start with the Dash since being promoted from High-A Kannapolis. He gave up seven earned runs over 5.1 innings pitched. Allowing three free passes didn’t help his case. The offense did its best to pick Thompson up, collecting a total of 15 hits. Hunter Jones went 4-for-5 with a double and 2 RBIs, and leads the Carolina League in hits. Nick Basto drove in three, cementing a 2-for-3 night with two walks and his own two-bagger. Speaking of doubles, Brett Austin went 2-for-4 for a pair of them to give the Dash six on the night.
Dash starter Tanner Banks will look to stay undefeated since arriving at Winston-Salem as he vies for his 5th win in six tries.
Missoula 7, Great Falls 1
Corey Zangari saved the Voyagers from the lowly designation of being no-hit by tallying a single in the 8th inning. Zangari went 2-for-4 in an otherwise barren night for Great Falls. Brady Conlan and Alex Call would be the only others to collect hits, with the latter driving in the club’s sole run. On the pitching side, Adam Panayotovich got the loss, giving up six runs over 5.2 frames. Only two of the runs were earned, with Great Falls committing three errors that would lead to Missoula scoring. Overall, it wasn’t a night to remember for the Voyagers.

AZL Reds 14, AZL White Sox 7
Andres Sanchez got the loss for the AZL White Sox, giving up two earned runs over three innings while walking two and striking out three. Aaron Bummer replaced him and had a “bummer” of an outing as he sees his first game action in nearly 2 years, surrendering four runs in just 0.2 innings pitched. Some rust for the rehabbing southpaw is to be expected, with his long period away from the game after multiple surgeries. Kevan Smith, currently on a rehab assignment as well, had a nice night offensively going 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a pair of walks. It was a strong game across the board for international prospects. Felix Mercedes and Maiker Feliz each tallied two hits, while Mercedes got the lone extra-base hit of the night for the ballclub.
