Louisville 4, Charlotte 3 (10 innings)
The Knights rallied to force extra innings, but Louisville’s Scott Schebler doubled and scored in the 10th inning to complete the cycle, and the Knights lost their seventh straight contest. Charlotte Starter Chris Volstad pitched well but did not factor into the decision, and was pulled after 6.2 innings having only allowed two runs to score. Chris Beck took the loss as he allowed the walk-off hit to score in the 10th. Reliever Juan Minaya struck out three batters over 1.2 scoreless innings and now has a 2.38 ERA since being acquired from the Houston organization.
Utility player Jake Peter went 3-4 with a double to led the offense.
David Holmberg will get the start hoping to salvage a win in the series finale on Wednesday.
Mississippi 4, Birmingham 0
The Barons out-hit the Mississippi Braves 6-to-5 but could not push across a run as they dropped the opening game of the series. Starter Jordan Guerrero started the game slowly, giving up four runs in the first two frames, but settled in nicely to pitch five innings. Matt Cooper came in in relief on Guerrero and struck out three over two scoreless innings and Zack Burdi finished the game with a scoreless inning of his own.
The Barons offense did not have an extra base hit and Marcus Lemon led the offense by going 2-3. Trey Michalczewski went 1-4 with a strikeout and has been a model of consistency this year. Michalczewski got off to a slow start to the season, but rebounded and saw his batting average hit its high-water mark at .250 on April 28th. From .250 he had dipped to .219 (May 7th) and reached .249 (June 26th) and now has settled in right between at .235. It should be noted that Michalczewski is only 21 years-old and young for AA, so his season is far from a disappointment.
Blair Walters will get the start on Wednesday as the Barons hope to bounce back.
Winston-Salem 2, Frederick 1
Three Dash pitchers combined to only allow three hits as the Dash won a tight game over the Frederick Keys on Tuesday. Starter Robinson Leyer allowed one run on two hits and a walk over six spectacular innings to earn the win. Reliever Connor Walsh came on and threw two perfect innings and Yelmison Peralta tossed a scoreless 9th for his second save with the Dash.
Outfielder Michael Suiter went 2-4 from the lead-off spot and Mason Robbins went 1-4 with a double to provide just enough run support for the win.
Jordan Stephens will get the ball and is tasked with going for the sweep of Frederick.
Kannapolis 16, Delmarva 3
The Intimidators set a franchise record with 24 hits and scored 16 runs as they annihilated the Delmarva Shorebirds. Micker Adolfo, a day after going 0-4 with four strikeouts, led the way by setting a career high with four hits. The Kannapolis offense blasted four home runs, and 2016 3rd round pick Alex Call hit his 2nd long ball in just nine games in Kanny. Call has been a revelation in his first pro season and is hitting .320/.432/.483 between Great Falls and Kannapolis. Shortstop Johan Cruz also went yard for his 5th home run this season, which is great pop for a 20 year-old middle infielder.
Starter Max Beatty was the recipient of all this run support and pitched well, not allowing an earned run over six innings.
The Intimidators, who have a winning record in the 2nd half of the season, begin a series with Greensboro on Thursday.
Grand Junction 7, Great Falls 3
Starter Yosmer Solorzano uncharacteristically struggled, allowing six runs (three earned) over 5.1 innings. However, Solorzano struck out six batters to just one walk.
Corey Zangari is officially heating up and went 3-4 with a double and now has a hit in twelve of his last thirteen contests. Second baseman Sam Dexter also went 3-4 with a double and Jameson Fisher went 2-5.
Aaron McRee will get the start and opposes Colorado’s 1st round pick Riley Pint on Wednesday.
AZL White Sox 11, AZL Dodgers 9
The AZL Sox survived a late rally from the Dodgers and held on for a win on Tuesday night. Catcher Jacob Cooper led the way by going 3-5 with a home run and double and is now hitting .343/.403/.571 on the year. 18 year-old Maiker Feliz also went deep for his first home run of 2016. The DSL product is a favorite prospect of mine because of his excellent control of the zone and bat-to-ball skills. Feliz has walked 11 times and only struck out 13 times over fifty at bats in the AZL this year and has a .260/.393/.340 slashline.
Rehabbing starter Matt Heidenreich allowed one run to score over three innings of work and 2016 draft pick Matt Foster picked up the save by striking out the only batter he faced. Reliever Luis Ledo and Evan Bell were victimized by poor defense, as they both allowed unearned runs to score.
