Charlotte 6, Norfolk 5
Jerry Sands, 2-4, was the hero of the game, launching a three run home run in the eighth inning to put the Knights ahead 6-3. Jason Coats also had a stellar game, going 1-2 with two walks and an RBI double. Adam Engel was recently demoted to the bottom of the order, likely in hopes to get him adjusted to AAA, and went 1-3 with his second stolen base at Charlotte.
David Holmberg pitched well enough for the win, going seven innings of three run ball that saw him strike out four batters to two walks. Chris Beck picked up the win after Sands’ go-ahead homer, but almost gave it away with two runs given up in the ninth until Juan Minaya came in to record the last out.
Jackson 7, Birmingham 6
The Barons were able to supply six runs of offense but it went for naught. Eddy Alvarez was hitless in two at-bats, but had three walks and scored a run. Courtney Hawkins went 1-5 with an RBI double, matched by Eudy Pina‘s 1-3 night with a walk and RBI double. Keenyn Walker was 1-4 with a triple and Alfredo Gonzalez was 2-4.
Blair Walters had a rough start for the Barons – a scant four innings that saw him walk five batters (to four Ks) and allow six runs to score. Brandon Brennan held the Generals down admirably for three innings of scoreless ball, but sadly Brian Clark gave up the winning run in his lone inning of work.
Frederick 1, Winston-Salem 0
Each team mustered six hits, but the Keys came up with the only run in this match. Jordan Stephens was a tough luck loser as he struck out six batters in six innings that saw him allow no earned runs. Drew Hasler, Ryan Riga and Euclides Leyer each threw a scoreless inning but with no offense, the Dash took home the L.
Gerson Montilla did his part to get the Dash on the board – going 2-4 with two doubles and was the only Dash member to not strike out. Mason Robbins, Nick Basto, Zack Collins and Telvin Nash all singled in this game.
Greensboro 5, Kannapolis 3
The story here is that Alex Call just keeps on hitting. The center fielder went 1-3 with a walk and is sporting a robust .341 average in his draft year. Tyler Sullivan was 1-2 with two walks and two runs scored in the lead off spot while K.J. Woods and Antonio Rodriguez drove in all three runs – Woods was 1-4 and Rodriguez was 2-3.
That being said, Woods’ glove helped contribute to this loss as he had two errors and the Grasshoppers scored two unearned runs off of Max Beatty, who allowed five runs total in his three innings. Dylan Barrow ended up facing the minimum in his three innings of work that saw him strike out three opponents.
Great Falls 6, Idaho Falls 5
Like Collins and Call, draft picks Mitch Roman, Aaron Schnurbusch, Brady Conlan and Jameson Fisher just keep on hitting. The first three all had a single to ther name in this game, with Conlan getting an RBI and a walk. Fisher was 2-4 with two doubles and two RBIs as he raised his average to .317, which does lag behind Schnurbusch’s .401 average and the hitless Joel Booker‘s .417 average. Carlos Perez was also 2-4 with an RBI an J.J. Franco was 2-4 with two doubles and an RBI of his own.
Bernardo Flores took home the win, striking out four in 5.2 innings of work where he only allowed two runs. Lane Hobbs allowed two in his brief four-out appearance. Kevin Escorcia allowed an unearned run in his frame while Jaider Rocha made things uneasy as he walked two and allowed two hits in the ninth, but ultimately got the save.
AZL White Sox 3, AZL Indians 1
Andres Sanchez blazed the path for the Sox in this extra innings affair. Allowing the only run in his 3.2 innings of work, he struck out four batters and the bullpen took it from there. Jhoan Quijada struck out two, no walks, in his 1.1 innings of work. Carlos Diaz and Brandon Agar each went a hitless inning. Matt Foster struck out three batters in his two innings of work and Evan Bell brought home the win, striking out three in his two innings.
The offense came off the bats of Hanleth Otano, Sam Dexter and Louis Silverio. The bottom of the order drove in all of the team’s RBIs. Otano was 2-5 (matched by Franklin Reyes) with an RBI. Dexter and Silverio each had only one single, but they made them count. Dante Flores had a triple.
