Norfolk 9, Charlotte 5
Charlotte led the International League South by a half game entering Saturday’s contest despite being 61-73 and they relinquished their unusual first place claim following their loss to the tides. The offense was led by Leury Garcia‘s 3-5 evening. Garcia, who has raked all year in Charlotte, had two RBIs to tie with Jerry Sands for the team lead as Sands went 1-4. Nick Delmonico threw in the last RBI after going 1-5. Eddy Alvarez, Jake Peter and Adam Engel each notched at least one hit, with Engel adding two walks.
Chris Volstad had a disastrous start for the Knights, giving up nine runs on 12 hits and a walk in only five innings of work. Matt Lollis and Will Lamb threw a combined three no-hit innings of relief, but in the end couldn’t overcome Volstad’s rough night.
Birmingham 4, Tennessee 2
Nolan Sanburn was stellar in his third straight start, going seven innings of shutout ball while only allowing five hits and one walk, while striking out two. Sanburn, acquired for Adam Dunn in 2014, has exclusively been a reliever in the White Sox organization until this point. In his three starts, Sanburn has allowed only three runs over 18 innings pitched. Brandon Brennan blew the save by allowing two runs in 0.2 innings of work, while Matt Cooper picked up the win in his 1.1 innings of perfect ball.
On offense, Hunter Jones led the way with tw0 RBIs, one of off a solo shot. Joey DeMichele had his own homer to break the tie, a one run blast in the ninth inning. Courtney Hawkins was also 2-5 with an RBI of his own.
Carolina 5, Winston-Salem 4
The Dash offense, missing Zack Collins, was able to string together nine hits with Landon Lassiter and Mason Robbins each having multi-hit games. Nick Basto and Marcus Davis each had a double for the team’s only extra base hits as the team struggled to plate runs. Gerson Montilla (0-3), Brett Austin (1-3) and Cleuluis Rondon (1-3) each recorded an RBI.
Kelvis Valerio had a great start as he went seven innings, allowing one run on five hits and no walks while striking out six batters. Sadly Yelmison Peralta recorded the blown save as he allowed three runs in one inning of work. Aaron Bummer lived up to his last name and took home a loss, despite allowing only one hit and one unearned run, keeping his ERA at 0.00.
Columbia 10, Kannapolis 6
Micker Adolfo had a great game back from the disabled list, going 3-4 with two RBIs as was left a home run short of the cycle. Seby Zavala also had a three hit game with a run scored and Antonio Rodirguez was 2-3 with a doubleand two RBIs of his own.
While the more notable prospects produced on offense (Alex Call sat this game), Max Beatty left them in a dire situation as the starter gave up eight runs, though only four were earned, in 2.2 inning. Danny Dopico and Johnathan Frebis each pitched at least two innings of scoreless relief where Dopico struck out five to Frebis’ 3, but then Ian Hamilton gave up two runs on one hit and three walks to bury the team. Dylan Barrow pitched a perfect ninth inning.
Great Falls 4, Missoula 1
Bernardo Flores was great in his seven innings of one run ball – he allowed eight hits, but no walks and struck out three batters to provide the offense with all of the room they needed. Matt Foster picked up the two inning save as he threw two scoreless innings of no-hit ball where he struck out three batters.
On offense, Mitch Roman had 3 of the team’s five hits, as he went 3-4 with a double and a run scored. Aaron Schnurbush was held hitless, a rarity for the 2016 draftee so far in his career, but did manage to reach base twice via walks. Sam Dexter, 0-3, had the only RBI for the team as three of their runs had been of the unearned variety.
AZL Angels 7, AZL White Sox 2
Andres Sanchez and the AZL White Sox only allowed two earned runs, but the defense ultimately allowed five unearned runs in this game. Sanchez went six innings with two walks, four runs (two earned) on four hits and four strikeouts. Salvador Villarreal went one inning that saw two hits, a walk and a strikeout and Lucas Shearrow pitched a perfect eighth inning in relief.
On offense the team could only muster four hits – Louis Silverio was 2-4 with an RBI for the team. Michael Hickman and Felix Mercedes each went 1-3 with a walk, with Hickman’s hit going down as a double. The rest of the team was held hitless.
