White Sox Minor League News and Notes, 8/7

In this first August edition of the White Sox Minor League News and Notes, we’ve got new prospect rankings! In addition, we will update you on the rest of the happenings, news, notes and transactions regarding the White Sox minor leaguers and affiliates.
Rankings Week
Last week we released our Midseason Top 30 Prospects list, in three parts – the Just Missed names, the 16-30 ranked players with capsules, and finally the full thirty list. Needless to say, this is the deepest the White Sox farm has been in decades, and it is one of the few best in all of baseball today. If you haven’t yet, give the list a read and get to know all the talent down on the farm.
Transactions
Charlotte

• OF Jacob May was activated from the Temporary Inactive List
• OF Jason Bourgeois was also activated from the Temporary Inactive List
• 3B/OF Nick Delmonico was promoted to the White Sox and made his MLB debut
• OF Jeff Gelalich was placed on the Disabled List
• 1B Casey Gillaspie was activated from the Disabled List
• The White Sox signed RHP Al Alburquerque and assigned him to Charlotte
• The White Sox claimed INF D.J. Peterson off waivers and optioned him to Charlotte
• INF Grant Green was released

Birmingham

• LHP Colton Turner assigned to Birmingham from Charlotte
• OF Tito Polo was placed on the Disabled List, retroactive to 7/29

Winston-Salem

• LHP Ian Clarkin was placed on the disabled list (mild core muscle strain) retroactive to 7/29
• RHP A.J. Puckett was assigned to Winston-Salem
• RHP Mick Van Vossen was assigned to Winston-Salem from Kannapolis
• RHP Jake Elliott was assigned to Winston-Salem from Kannapolis, then sent back to KAN 2 days later
• 1B Matt Rose was placed on the Disabled List
• OF Louis Silverio was activated from the Disabled List
• RHP Drew Hasler was assigned back to Winston-Salem from Birmingham

Kannapolis

• LHP Andre Davis was assigned to Kannapolis

• RHP Dylan Covey was assigned to the AZL White Sox for rehab assignment

For the Record

• Charlotte went 1-5 on the week, are 46-67 on the season and are nearing elimination from post-season contention. The continued exodus of prospects to Chicago has taken a continuing toll on the Knights, who have won just one of their last ten games. Lucas Giolito threw a 5-inning gem on Saturday allowing no runs and striking out seven, but other highlights are tough to come by for the AAA club right now. They will spend the next seven games on the road, visiting Pawtucket and Lehigh Valley on a northerly road trip swing.
• Birmingham went 3-4 last week (18-27 2nd half, 14 games back) and still sit in last place in the SL North. Michael Kopech‘s start on Saturday, as part of a slate of excellent outings in the upper minors, was dominant in helping the club win that game: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 UER, 1 BB, 11 K. Kopech has found a groove recently and Sox fans are starting to clamor for a promotion.
• Winston-Salem had a big 6-1 week, winning those six in a row before losing the last one. The Dash have moved up to second place in the CAR South at 22-21 in the second half, but are still 7 games back. The Dash roster is now quite stacked with prospect depth, and there is every reason to believe they can make a run at a playoff spot, but they only have a month to work with to catch Buies Creek.
• Kannapolis opened the week with four wins, but then lost the next three straight. The Intimidators currently sit in last place in the SAL North, but at 19-24 they are only 5 games out of the division and still in the picture. With the recent additions of draft and trade-acquired talent, look for the I’s to make a good run at it. The good news is, they are already in the playoffs, having won their division in the first half. They should be a dangerous team come September.
• Coming out of the Pioneer/Northwest Leagues All Star Game, Great Falls split their week at 2-2. They stand at 2-3 so far in the second half, and would need to win their division’s second half crown to make the postseason.
• The AZL White Sox had a nice 4-1 week, putting them at 5-1 and in first place early in the second half in the Central division. A win of that division in the second half would put them in the playoffs.
• The DSL White Sox went 2-4 on the week, have an overall record of 22-31 and are tied for seventh (of 8 teams) in the Baseball City Division.

In Case You Missed It

• The White Sox informed us that shortstop Luis Curbelo had meniscus surgery on his knee, and will be out until Fall Instructs.
• Josh Norris of Baseball America took in one of Alec Hansen‘s recent starts and came away impressed with the progress of his change-up.
• James Fegan of The Athletic is making another tour of the affiliate clubs in North Carolina. He wrote in detail about Zack Collins and the “hitch” in his swing, and what Collins plans to do about it.
