Scouting Report
When he signed for team record $1.6 million, Adolfo generated a lot of buzz. He was one of the top international prospects in that year’s class (No. 2 per MLB.com, No. 9 per Baseball America). Adolfo was born in the U.S. Virgin Islands and speaks fluent English so his transition to playing ball and living in the U.S. wasn’t be as steep as it is with many foreign players. He moved to the Dominican Republic at age 14, making him eligible for the international signing period.
Adolfo made his professional debut with the AZL club in 2014. He was very raw at age 17, posting a .659 OPS with some power (5 HR in 198 PA) but also striking out in 42.8% of his plate appearances. Repeating the level in 2015 he played in 22 games before breaking his leg on a slide into home plate.
In 2016, Adolfo opened with Class A Kannapolis. He played 15 games before going down with an injury (fractured hook of hamate bone), rehabbed briefly in AZL, then returned to Kanny in late June. Post-injury he hit .228/.281/.371 with a 32.6% K/PA rate. He finally had his breakout year in 2017. He hit .264/.331/.453 with 16 HR in 112 games. The progress appeared to be continuing in with Winston-Salem before a pinhole UCL tear forced his season to end in July due to Tommy John surgery. He finished with a .283/.368/.466 line.
He reached Double-A Birmingham, but was shut down after 23 games due to another injury setback. This time it was arthroscopic elbow surgery to clean out scar tissue. He returned in August on rehab in the rookie Arizona League and trained at the White Sox alternate site in Schaumburg in 2020.
Adolfo is a very good athlete with the ability to play a solid right field with a good arm, but his best tool is his power. He has developed significantly since joining the organization, especially in terms of approach and discipline. His arm is his only positive trait defensively, he’s below average in terms of speed and range. He’s been in the system several years, but is still young enough to be a solid prospect.
Major League Outlook: Power-hitting right fielder
