White Sox MiLB Team of the Week

Jake Burger’s remarkable comeback story and trajectory toward the bigs continued to grab headlines this past week as the White Sox No. 12 prospect posted a monster stat line in Triple-A Charlotte’s series against Durham (TBR).

The former first-rounder highlights the White Sox MiLB Team of the Week for the period of May 17-23, 2021. Here’s a look at the full lineup:

Catcher — Victor Torres (Low-A) — 3 G, .400/.455/.800, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R

  • Catchers on the farm largely struggled at the plate over the seven-day period, but Low-A backstop Victor Torres impressed in limited time. The 20-year-old from Puerto Rico launched his first professional home run in Kannapolis’ 6-2 win against Columbia (KC) on Friday and reached base safely in all three appearances.

First baseman — Ti’Quan Forbes (Double-A) — 4 G, .286/.375/.500, HR, RBI, 4 R, SB

  • Ti’Quan Forbes, a former second-round pick of the Texas Rangers, earns the nod at first base this week. The versatile infielder has earned starts at all five positions throughout his minor-league career, but has split his time between first (10 games) and third (six games) this season. Forbes scored four runs over the past week, added a stolen base and delivered his third home run of the campaign in Double-A Birmingham’s 5-4 win against Montgomery on Sunday.

Second baseman — JJ Muno (Double-A) — 5 G, .294/.368/.588, 3B, HR, 6 RBI, SB

  • A clear-cut choice at second base this week, JJ Muno produced in a number of ways for Double-A Birmingham. The 27-year-old, a number which matches his draft round, drove in six runs across five games for the Barons. He also recorded his first home run at the Double-A level and swiped his team-leading fifth base of the season.

Third baseman — Jake Burger (Triple-A) — 5 G, .333/.364/.905, 3 2B, 3 HR, 5 RBI

  • White Sox No. 12 prospect Jake Burger continued his assault on Triple-A pitching over the past week and filled the system’s social-media circles with highlights abound. Burger, whom the Sox selected 11th overall in 2017, uncorked three home runs, six extra-base hits and five RBI across five games for the Knights. The former Missouri State star paces Charlotte in OPS (.962), home runs (6) and RBI (14).

Shortstop — Jose Rodriguez (Low-A) — 6 G, .333/.385/.583, 3 2B, HR, 2 RBI, SB

  • White Sox No. 15 prospect Jose Rodriguez posted a 4-for-5 performance Saturday to help propel him to the weekly honor at shortstop. The 20-year-old Rodriguez continued to act as the main spark plug for Low-A Kannapolis and filled the box score with four extra-base hits, one home run, a pair of RBI and one stolen base in six games.

Outfield — Blake Rutherford (Triple-A) — 5 G, .348/.348/.391, 2B, RBI, 4 R, 2 SB

  • White Sox No. 8 prospect Blake Rutherford saw his eight-game hit streak come to a close Friday night, but easily secured a spot on the MiLB Team of the Week. The 24-year-old outfielder batted .348 across five games and posted a pair of three-hit performances in Triple-A Charlotte’s series against Durham (TBR). Rutherford has hit safely in nine of his past 10 games and also flashed a bit of speed with a pair of stolen bases over the past week.

Outfield — Benyamin Bailey (Low-A) — 6 G, .333/.333/.333, RBI, R

  • White Sox No. 14 prospect Benyamin Bailey, who entered the week batting .083 at Low-A Kannapolis, raised his batting average by 100 points over the six-game slate. The 19-year-old outfielder logged three multi-hit efforts in the Cannon Ballers’ series against Columbia (KC).

Outfield — Micker Adolfo (Double-A) — 5 G, .444/.500/.889, 2 2B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 3 R

  • White Sox No. 6 prospect Micker Adolfo showed off his power potential with four extra-base hits, including two home runs, for Double-A Birmingham. The 24-year-old Dominican outfielder saw his six-game hit streak broken Sunday.

Starting pitcher — Davis Martin (Hi-A) — W, 5.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K

  • Right-hander Davis Martin turned in five perfect frames and earned his second win of the season as Hi-A Winston-Salem topped Jersey Shore on Friday. Martin, a 14th-round pick out of Texas Tech, needed just 54 pitches (40 strikes) to work through the five innings and struck out five in a textbook performance.

Relief pitcher — Ofreidy Gomez (Double-A) — 2 G, 2 W, 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 8 K

  • Ofreidy Gomez continued to be one of the most-effective arms out of the bullpen across the White Sox system. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound right-hander tossed six scoreless innings in two appearances, struck out eight and collected a pair of wins for Double-A Birmingham. Gomez, 25, lowered his season-long ERA to 1.23 and WHIP to 0.89 as a result. He also paces the Barons in opponent batting average (.125) and K/9 rate (14.11).
