Tending to the Farm: Luis Gonzalez torches Gwinnett pitching

This series will contain weekly recaps of the performances of each minor league affiliate. Here is the latest installment after the tenth week of the minor league season.

Charlotte Knights (25-39)

Weekly Record: 0-6

The Gwinnett Stripers came to town and treated their hosts rather rudely, winning all six games of this divisional match-up. Charlotte has now lost their last eight games in a row. The Knights currently reside in sixth place and 19 games back in the Triple-A East Southeast Division.

Despite getting shut out in the win column, Charlotte hitters finished the week with some very respectable numbers. Knights batters slashed .254/.336/.478, a 814 OPS with 32 runs, 52 hits in 205 at bats, 11 doubles, one triple, 11 home runs, 31 RBI, 22 walks to 58 strikeouts, five stolen bases, and were not caught stealing. Knights pitching couldn’t be happier to see this series finally come to an end. Charlotte pitchers struggled mightily against Gwinnett, ending the series with a team ERA of 8.00, 1.83 WHIP, .289 Batting Average Against, 48 earned runs to 56 runs allowed, 66 hits to 54 innings pitched, 33 walks to 68 strikeouts, four hit batters, and allowed 13 home runs. Hot Player of the Week

Luis Gonzalez: Luis Gonzalez was absolutely on red hot this week against Stripers pitching. In six games, Gonzalez lit up Gwinnett to a .438/.609/.813 for a 1.421 OPS, scored five runs, two home runs, five RBI, stole three bases, had seven walks to three strikeouts, and had seven hits in 16 at bats.

Honorable Mentions: Yermin Mercedes, Jake Lamb (rehabbing), and Kyle Kubat

Birmingham Barons (34-31)

Weekly Record: 3-3

Birmingham took on the Rocket City Trash Pandas this week. After battling some inclement weather, the Barons managed another series split against their divisional counterparts. Birmingham is in second place and three games back in the Double-A South North Division.

Baron hitters enjoyed was Rocket City pitchers were offering them this past week. Birmingham batters concluded the week by slashing .315/.376/.497 for a 874 OPS, 32 runs, 57 hits in 181 at bats, seven doubles, one triple, eight home runs, 32 RBI, 15 walks to 61 strikeouts, seven stolen bases, and were caught stealing once. Birmingham pitchers didn’t quite have the same success in this series that their teammates on offense did. Baron pitchers finished the series against the Trash Pandas with a 5.17 Team ERA, 1.36 WHIP, .211 Batting Average Against, 27 earned runs to 32 runs allowed, 36 hits to 47 innings pitched, 28 walks to 54 strikeouts, two hit batters, and allowed seven home runs. Hot Player of the Week

Carlos Perez: Carlos Perez had quite the week, which included the young catcher going five for five on Wednesday evening. The 2014 international signing finished the week with a .579/.600/.579 slash line, a 1.179 OPS, five runs scored, two RBI, struck out once, stole one base, and had 11 hits in 19 at bats.

Winston-Salem Dash (26-40)

Weekly Record: 0-6

The Dash took on first place Bowling Green this week. In a series they’d like to soon forget, Winston-Salem was swept by the Hot Rods, and the Dash are currently in last place in the High-A East South Division and 19 games out of first place.

Dash batters struggled mightily against the top team in the High-A East. Winston-Salem couldn’t muster much against Bowling Green pitchers, concluding the series with a .201/.242/.315 slash line, a 558 OPS, 14 runs scored, 37 hits in 184 at bats, nine doubles, no triples, four home runs, 14 RBI, eight walks to 67 strikeouts, three stolen bases, and were caught stealing once. Similarly to the hitters, Dash pitchers struggled against the Hot Rods. Winston-Salem pitching has really fallen on hard times, now posting poor marks across the board for the last month. Bowling Green torched Dash pitchers, as they finished the series with a team ERA of 8.18, 1.68 WHIP, .287 Batting Average Against, 40 earned runs to 41 runs allowed, 51 hits to 44 innings pitched, 23 walks to 55 strikeouts, hit two batters, and allowed eight home runs. Trey Jeans: In what was a very tough week all around, Trey Jeans stood out as the top performer for the Dash. Jeans kept it high and tight in both of his appearances this week, getting four innings of work, allowing three hits, no runs, no walks, struck out eight Hot Rods, a 0.75 WHIP, and had a .214 Batting Average Against.

Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (19-46)

Weekly Record: 0-6

The Cannon Ballers took on the division leading Carolina Mudcats this past week. There must have been something in the water on the farm, as Kannapolis was the third affiliate swept this week. Kannapolis is very much in last place in the Low-A East Central Division and 21 games back of first place.

The Cannon Baller hitters faced some challenges with a tough Mudcats pitching staff. Kannapolis hit Carolina pitchers to a .255/.353/.358 slash line, a 711 OPS, 28 runs, 52 hits in 204 at-bats, 13 doubles, one triple, two home runs, 24 RBI, 29 walks to 52 strikeouts, three stolen bases, and were not caught stealing. To say that Kannapolis pitching’ was not good this week would be an understatement. Mudcats hitters absolutely torched the Cannon Baller staff, as they finished the series with a team ERA of 9.00, 2.02 WHIP, .295 Batting Average Against, 54 earned runs to 62 runs allowed, 67 hits to 54 innings pitched, 42 walks to 53 strikeouts, hit two batters, and allowed nine home runs. Hot Player of the Week

Caberea Weaver: Despite the struggles of the Cannon Ballers this week, Caberea Weaver’s performance with the bat stood out. The outfielder played in five games, slashing .333/.619/.667 for a 1.286 OPS, two doubles, one triple, three runs scored, three RBI, nine walks to four strikeouts, stole three bases (was not caught stealing), and had four hits in 12 at bats.

Honorable Mentions: Harvin Mendoza, Chase Krogman, Luis Mieses, and Sammy Peralta

ACL White Sox (4-10)

Weekly Record: 1-4

Identical to last week, the ACL Sox played five games this week, and came up on the short end four times. The ACL White Sox sit in second to last place and are 7 games back of first place. Full standings of the ACL can be found here.

Once again, the ACL White Sox struggled to get anything going offensively this past week. The group concluded the past week of play with a .193/.324/.317 slash line, a 641 OPS, 15 runs, 28 hits in 145 at-bats, six doubles, no triples, four home run, 14 RBI, 18 walks to 52 strikeouts, stole two bases, and were caught stealing once. The ACL White Sox pitching staff saw some improvement in this weeks worth of games. The ACL Sox wrapped the week with a team ERA of 5.54, 1.67 WHIP, .239 Batting Average Against, 28 earned runs to 34 runs allowed, 34 hits to 39 innings pitched, 31 walks to 49 strikeouts, hit four batters, and allowed two home runs. Hot Player of the Week

Misael Gonzalez: Misael Gonzalez had a nice week for the ACL Sox. In three games, the 20 year old outfielder hit .429/.556/1.000 for an 1.556 OPS, one double, one home run, four RBI, scored one run, had one walk to two strikeouts, and had three hits in seven ABs.

Honorable Mentions: Jefferson Mendoza, Dilmer Mejia, and Homer Cruz

DSL White Sox (3-2)

Weekly Record: 3-2

The Dominican Summer League season got underway this past week and the White Sox have one team participating in the league. After the first week of play, the DSL Sox are tied for second in the Dominican Summer League Baseball City Division.

After the first week of play, the DSL White Sox are off to a slow start. The group wrapped opening week with a .175/.326/.263 slash line, a 589 OPS, 18 runs, 20 hits in 114 at-bats, two doubles, one triple, two home runs, 13 RBI, 23 walks to 45 strikeouts, stole seven bases, and were caught stealing twice. The DSL White Sox pitching staff had a rocky debut. The staff finished the week with a team ERA of 5.00, 1.52 WHIP, .240 Batting Average Against, 15 earned runs to 16 runs allowed, 23 hits to 27 innings pitched, 18 walks to 26 strikeouts, hit two batters, and allowed no home runs. Hot Player of the Week

Dario Borrero: Dario Borrero had a very nice debut week for the DSL White Sox. In four games, Borrero slashed .364/.462/.455 for an 916 OPS, one double, scored two runs, had one walk to two strikeouts, stole one base (and was caught stealing once), and had four hits in 11 ABs.
