Remillard, Zavala and a red-hot Mahtook go yard in another loss to Bulls

The Knights followed up their four-homer game on Saturday with three more today.  But, like so many games against the Bulls this year, it wasn’t quite enough, as Durham rallied for a 9-4 win.

Mikie Mahtook hit his 25th round tripper on the year in the bottom of first with one on.  It was his fourth of the week and third in two days.  Right out of the parent-club Rays’ playbook, the Bulls acknowledged Mahtook’s big bat by employing four outfielders against him in the sixth.

Zach Remillard put the Knights up 3-0 in the third with his 12th of the year.  One inning later, the Bulls pushed across their first run but Seby Zavala got it right back in the bottom half of the inning with his seventh homer on the season.

But an old bugaboo surfaced in the top of the fifth with two outs and a runner on first when reliever Hunter Schryver issued two walks in front of a game-tying, bases-clearing double.

Bennett Sousa and Kevin McCarthy held the Bulls scoreless in the sixth and seventh, but Lane Ramsey got roughed up for five runs in the top of the eighth.  Anderson Severino pitched a clean ninth with two more strikeouts.  He now has 18 in 11 innings for the Knights.

Aside from the three homers, the Knights couldn’t muster much else other than three singles.  For the third game in a row, the Bulls did not issue a walk, while the Knights’ staff gave up eight tonight.

The Knights return to action Wednesday against the Norfolk Tides in the final homestand of the year.
