White Sox Officially sign outfielders Oscar Colás and Erick Hernández on international market

The wait is finally over and Cuban outfielder Oscar Colás is officially joining the Chicago White Sox’s organization after a multi-year journey. The franchise announced the signing of Dominican teenager Erick Hernández as well.

The 6-1 210 pound outfielder is ranked as the #5 overall prospect on the international market according to MLB Pipeline. The 23-year-old hits left-handed and throws with the same arm as well. Colás hasn’t played consistently in awhile and it’ll be interesting to see how the long lay off has affected him on the baseball diamond. He receives a bonus of $2.7 million from the club. “Colás possesses an aggressive style of play that includes an impressive power bat and arm, as well as the ability to play above average defense at all three outfield positions.”, said Marco Paddy, special assistant to the general manager-international operations.

“We feel very good with what we were able to accomplish this year,” Paddy said. “Having the ability to sign two high-level prospects with impact type tools like Colás and Hernández, I would categorize that as a solid year.” “Hernández is a high-energy, aggressive player with a natural feel for hitting,” said Paddy. “He has the potential to develop plus tools across the board which include a power bat and high-level defense in the outfield.”

17-year-old Dominican outfielder Erick Hernández will receive $1 million from the White Sox and he’s the highest upside teenager they’ve inked since Fernando Tatis Jr. The 6-0 175 pounder is an advanced hitter from Moca in the Dominican Republic. He also bats and throws left-handed and is ranked as the #28 overall player in this year’s signing class according to MLB.com.

The White Sox still have bonus pool space available and they are expected to announce more signings in the coming weeks. The organization is expected to sign Dominican right hander Angel Cruz in this period as well according to Baseball America. It’s expected that Colás will play in the United States this year and where ultimately starts is to be determined. Hernández likely remains in the Dominican Republic initially.

Marco Paddy and Oscar Colás meet the media this afternoon and we’ll have more on this developing story.
