Spencer Adams appears to be the most successful draft pick from the White Sox 2014 draft class so far. He added another stellar outing to the list Saturday night in Arizona. The player who is possibly right behind him on that list, Jake Peter, also had a good day for Great Falls.
Knights 5, Gwinnett 3
Avisail Garcia 3-5
Garcia’s rehab continued with a 3-5 day to complement his 2-4 day yesterday.
Chattanooga 6, Barons 3
Kevan Smith and Grant Buckner had two hits each in the loss. Jefferson Olacio made his AA debut with a typically erratic outing (2.1 IP, 2 R, 3 K, 3 BB, 3 H).
Dash 5, Lynchburg 4
Joey DeMichele 3-4, 2 2B, 3B, K
Brandon Brennan 5 IP, 2 R, 3 K, 3 BB, 6 H
DeMichele’s three extra base hits paced the Dash offense. Brennan made his Winston-Salem debut after just three starts with Kannapolis as part of his recovery from injury.
Augusta 5, Intimidators 2
Tyler Barnette 4.2 IP, R, 7 K, 2 BB, 2 H
Barnette’s career-high 7 strikeouts in relief weren’t enough. Adam Engel (2-4), Trey Michalczewski (1-3, 2B, BB, K) and Brett Austin (1-3, BB) had the best days for the offense.
Voyagers 5, Billings 4
Chevy Clarke 2-5, HR, K
Jake Peter 3-4, 2B, K
Zach Thompson’s quality start (6 IP, 2 R) led the Voyagers to a win. Clarke hit his 10th homer of the season and Peter raised his batting average to .385.
Dodgers 4, Arizona White Sox 1
Spencer Adams 6 IP, 3 R, 9 K, 0 BB, 8 H
The offense didn’t do much to support him, but Adams again stood out in his seventh start of the season. His ERA moved up to 4.08, but everything else in his numbers is fantastic. He now has 40 strikeouts against just 2 walks in 28.2 innings. The 18-year-old looks every bit the part of a standout high school prospect so far. Hopefully next season we see more of the same in Kannapolis.
Spencer Adams B1: FB 93-94 T95 flashes late jolt, SL/CT thing 86-88 can really swerve. Yikes.

I don’t know whether Spencer Adams calls his high-80s pitch a slider or a cutter, but when it’s on, it’s near unhittable.

It showed more downward break and he threw it at 84 last inning, so I’m calling it a slider. A damn good one.
