Tending to the Farm: Colson Montgomery is excelling

This series will recap the performances of each White Sox minor league affiliate throughout the week. Here is the eighth installment of the 2022 season.

Charlotte Knights (17-31)

Weekly Record: 1-5

Last week the Knights battled against their in-state rivals the Durham Bulls. Eloy Jimenez and Lance Lynn also began their rehab assignments, although the former left the game after his second at bat and is considered day to day. Once again, Charlotte had a week’s worth of poor performances, dropping five of six games to the Bulls. Charlotte is in ninth place and 13.5 games back in the International League East Division.

The Knights offense struggled against the Bulls pitching staff. Charlotte’s lineup slashed .244/.299/.371 for a .670 OPS. They also scored 19 runs, had 50 hits in 205 at bats, six doubles, one triple, six home runs, 14 walks to 52 strikeouts, and went 8-for-10 on stolen bases. Complete season totals for the Knights offense can be found here.

The Knights pitching staff had a rough go against the Durham lineup. The hurlers wrapped the series with a team ERA of 5.33, a 1.49 WHIP, .293 Batting Average Against, 29 earned runs to 31 runs allowed, 55 hits to 49 innings pitched, 18 walks to 47 strikeouts, hitting three batters and allowing 11 home runs. Adam Haseley: Adam Haseley was fantastic against the Bulls. The former first round pick slashed .400/.455/700 for a 1.155 OPS, scoring three runs while also bringing home three RBI, had two home runs, went 4-for-4 on stolen bases, and had eight hits across 20 at-bats.

Birmingham Barons (17-28)

Weekly Record: 3-3

Birmingham took a trip to Tennessee to take on the Chattanooga Lookouts last week. Despite dropping the first three of four, the Barons were able to secure wins on both Saturday and Sunday and worked a series split. The Barons are in last place and are 10 games back in the Southern League North Division.

The Barons bats had a very good week at the plate against Chattanooga pitching. Birmingham slashed .290/.397/.455 for an .852 OPS. They also scored 33 runs, had 58 hits in 200 at-bats, nine doubles, three triples, six home runs, 33 walks to 44 strikeouts, and went 10-for-13 on stolen bases. The Birmingham pitching staff also had a nice week on the mound against the Lookouts lineup. Birmingham concluded the series with a team ERA of 4.25, a 1.68 WHIP, .286 Batting Average Against, 23 earned runs to 30 runs allowed, 53 hits to 48.2 innings pitched, 29 walks to 51 strikeouts, and hit five batters while allowing five home runs. Tyler Neslony: Tyler Neslony has been outstanding since joining the Barons, and last week was no different. The outfielder slashed .350/.458/.800 for a 1.258 OPS, scoring five runs, eight RBI, three doubles, two home runs, went 3-for-3 on stolen bases, and had seven hits across 20 at-bats.

Winston-Salem Dash (21-24)

Weekly Record: 2-5

The Dash were in Hickory taking on the Crawdads last week. This series turned out to be a seven game set, as both teams were making up a previously postponed date. The Dash did not have a good time, dropping five of seven in the series. The Dash reside in fourth place and are six and a half games back in the South Atlantic League South Division.

The Dash offense had a poor week at the plate. Winston-Salem ended the series with a .202/.256/.330 slash line for a .586 OPS. Additionally, the Dash scored 26 runs, had 44 hits in 218 at bats, six doubles, two triples, six home runs, 16 walks to 47 strikeouts, and went 2-for-2 on stolen bases. Dash pitching had slightly better results than last week, but still left room for further improvement. Winston-Salem concluded the series with team ERA of 5.07, a 1.53 WHIP, and a .264 Batting Average Against. Winston-Salem also allowed 39 runs (31 earned) on 55 hits over 55 innings, 29 walks to 50 strikeouts, with three hit batters and nine home runs allowed. Ty Madrigal: In a week of below average performances for the Dash, Ty Madrigal stood out for the right reasons. The 25 year-old lefty had two appearances throwing 3.1 innings, allowing one hit, one unearned run, one walk, struck out five batters and had a 0.60 WHIP and a .100 Batting Average Against.

Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (18-27)

Weekly Record: 1-5

The Cannon Ballers were in Carolina taking on the North Division leading Mudcats last week. The Mudcats proved to be an extremely tough match-up for the Ballers, as they dropped five of six games. Kannapolis is in fifth place and 14 games back in the Carolina League South Division.

The Cannon Baller bats had a tough time getting to Mudcat pitching. Kannapolis slashed .192/.324/.363 for a .687 OPS, 22 runs scored, 35 hits in 182 at-bats, seven doubles, no triples, eight home runs, 33 walks to 65 strikeouts, and went 7-for-8 on stolen bases. Kannapolis pitching wasn’t much better. Actually, it was worse! The Cannon Ballers got wrecked to the tune of a team ERA of 8.56, 1.92 WHIP, and a .322 Batting Average Against, 48 runs allowed (45 earned) on 66 hits over 47.1 innings. Colson Montgomery: Colson Montgomery once again had a solid week for the Cannon Ballers. The 20 year-old hit .294/.400/.588 for a .988 OPS, scoring four runs, hitting two doubles, one home run, four RBI, and had five hits across 17 at bats.
