Tending to the Farm: Matthew Thompson, Cristian Mena stifle the opposition

This series will recap the performances of each White Sox minor league affiliate throughout the previous week. Here is the 10th installment of the 2022 season.

Charlotte Knights (23-37)

Weekly Record: 4-2

Charlotte journeyed to Louisville to take on the Bats last week. The Knights enjoyed their stay for the most part, winning four of six while securing a series win. Charlotte is tied for ninth place and 12 games back in the International League East Division.

The Charlotte offense had back to back weeks of unspectacular, but solid production. The Knights slashed .252/.330/.411 for a .741 OPS. They also scored 31 runs, had 51 hits in 202 at-bats, 14 doubles, three triples, four home runs, 24 walks to 48 strikeouts, and went 6-for-10 on stolen bases. Complete season totals for the Knights offense can be found here.

Compared to the previous week, Charlotte’s pitching staff had much better results against the Louisville lineup. The Knights held a team ERA of 4.75, a 1.53 WHIP, .300 Batting Average Against, 28 earned runs to 31 runs allowed, 63 hits to 53 innings pitched, 18 walks to 53 strikeouts, hitting five batters and allowing three home runs. 🔥 Hot Player of the Week 🔥

Adam Haseley: Once again Adam Haseley spent another week absolutely scorching the ball. The 26 year-old slashed .412/.522/.882 for a 1.404 OPS, scoring six runs, had seven RBI, three doubles, one home run, succeeded in his only stolen base attempt, and had seven hits across 17 at-bats.

Honorable Mentions: Yermin Mercedes, Mark Payton, Brandon Finnegan, Kade McClure, and Andrew Perez

Birmingham Barons (22-35)

Weekly Record: 3-3

Birmingham returned to Regions Field and welcomed the Pensacola Blue Wahoos to town. After dropping three of the first four games of the series, the Barons were able to secure wins in the final two games, working a series split. The Barons are in last place and are 12 games back in the Southern League North Division.

The Barons bats cooled off some, but were still productive last week against Pensacola pitchers. Birmingham slashed .258/.359/.381 for a .740 OPS. They also scored 31 runs, had 50 hits in 194 at-bats, seven doubles, one triple, five home runs, 29 walks to 42 strikeouts, and went 9-for-13 on stolen bases. Barons pitching almost mirrored their output from the previous week against the Pensacola lineup. Birmingham finished the series with a 4.91 team ERA, a 1.33 WHIP, .229 Batting Average Against, 30 earned runs to 35 runs allowed, 48 hits to 55 innings pitched, 25 walks to 61 strikeouts, hitting four batters while allowing eight home runs. JJ Muno: JJ Muno was fantastic against Pensacola pitching. The 28 year-old slashed .375/.474/.688 for a 1.162 OPS, scoring five runs, five RBI, two doubles, one home run, went 2-for-3 on stolen bases, and had six hits across 16 at-bats.

Winston-Salem Dash (30-27)

Weekly Record: 4-2

Visiting Truist Stadium this week were the Greensboro Grasshoppers. Looking to continue their solid play lately, Winston-Salem was able to secure a series win, taking four of six from the Grasshoppers. The Dash are still in fourth place and are four and a half games back in the South Atlantic League South Division.

The Dash offense had yet another great week at the dish. Winston-Salem knocked around Greensboro pitching to a .292/.400/.450 slash line and an .850 OPS. The Dash also scored 32 runs, had 59 hits in 202 at bats, 14 doubles, no triples, six home runs, 33 walks to 50 strikeouts, and went 4-for-6 on stolen bases. Once again, the Dash pitching staff concocted another solid weeks worth of performances. Winston-Salem wrapped the series with team ERA of 3.60, a 1.13 WHIP, and a .232 Batting Average Against. The Dash also allowed 26 runs (22 earned) on 46 hits over 55 innings, 16 walks to 51 strikeouts, hitting three batters and allowing seven home runs. 🔥 Hot Player of the Week 🔥

Matthew Thompson: Matthew Thompson was simply brilliant in his lone start of the week. The 21 year-old threw six innings allowing only two hits, one walk, no runs, struck out eight batters, and had a .111 Batting Average Against and a 0.50 WHIP.

Honorable Mentions: Tyler Osik, Oscar Colas, Duke Ellis, Terrell Tatum, Adam Hackenberg, Trey Jeans, and Jesus Valles

Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (23-34)

Weekly Record: 3-3

The Wood Ducks of Down East took up a short residency at Atrium Health Ballpark last week to battle against the Cannon Ballers, trying to spoil Norge Vera‘s full season debut. While the Wood Ducks jumped out early, winning three of the first four, the Ballers rebounded to win the final two games, working a series split. Kannapolis still occupies fifth place and are 17 games back in the Carolina League South Division.

The offensive skid for the Ballers continued against Wood Ducks pitchers. Kannapolis limped to a .185/.248/.376 slash line and a .624 OPS. The Ballers also scored 23 runs, had 35 hits in 189 at-bats, five doubles, two triples, nine home runs, 13 walks to 64 strikeouts, and went 3-for-5 on stolen bases. Kannapolis’ pitching staff was simply outstanding against the Down East lineup. The Cannon Ballers wrapped up the series with a team ERA of 2.29, a 1.07 WHIP, and a .236 Batting Average Against. They also allowed 18 runs (14 earned) on 47 hits over 55 innings, issuing 12 walks against 67 strikeouts, while hitting one batter and allowing just one home run. Cristian Mena: After a brief hiatus, the Cristian Mena party returned to North Carolina. The 19 year-old Dominican threw six innings, allowing four hits, no runs, no walks, struck out eight batters, had a .200 Batting Average Against and 0.67 WHIP.

Honorable Mentions: Benyamin Bailey, Tommy Sommer, Chase Plymell, Haylen Green, and Brooks Gosswein

ACL White Sox (4-1)

Weekly Record: 4-1

In the opening week of the ACL season, the White Sox squad had a strong start. The ACL Sox were able to secure four out of a possible five wins for the week. The ACL White Sox are tied for second place with three other teams after the first week of the season. Full standings of the ACL can be found here.

The ACL White Sox had a so-so week at the plate to kick off their season. The Arizona affiliate slashed .254/.327/.373 for a .700 OPS, scoring 22 runs, 36 hits in 142 at bats, two doubles, three triples, three home runs, 14 walks to 47 strikeouts, and went 2-for2 on stolen bases. The ACL White Sox pitching staff had a solid debut week in 2022. The staff concluded the week with a team ERA of 3.79, 1.21 WHIP, .241 Batting Average Against, 16 earned runs to 19 runs allowed, 34 hits in 38 innings pitched, 12 walks to 39 strikeouts, hit three batters, and allowed seven home runs. Hunter Dollander: Hunter Dollander had a very strong start for the ACL White Sox last week. The 25 year-old righty threw five innings, allowing two hits, one walk, no runs, struck out eight, and had a .118 Batting Average Against along with a 0.60 WHIP.

Honorable Mentions: Jose Jimenez, Dario Borrero, Johnabiell Laureano, and Javier Mora

DSL White Sox (6-0)

Weekly Record: 6-0

The DSL White Sox couldn’t have kicked off their season any better. The DSL Sox started hot and won their first six contests. The DSL Sox sit atop of the Dominican Summer League.

The DSL White Sox had a very strong opening week. The DSL Sox had a .304/.434/.409 slash line, an .843 OPS, 41 runs scored, 52 hits in 171 at bats, six doubles, three triples, two home runs, 36 walks to 51 strikeouts, and went 10-for-12 on stolen bases. Picking up where the offense left off, the DSL White Sox pitching staff also were fantastic in the opening week. The staff concluded the week with a team ERA of 3.07, a 1.36 WHIP, .226 Batting Average Against, 15 earned runs to 21 runs allowed, 37 hits to 44 innings pitched, 23 walks to 44 strikeouts, hit one batter, and allowed two home runs. Erick Hernandez: Erick Hernandez was outstanding in his professional debut week. The 17 year-old outfielder hit .444/.545/.556 for a 1.101 OPS, scored three runs, hit one triple, had two RBI, went 3-for-3 on stolen bases, and eight hits across 18 at bats.

Honorable Mentions: Ronny Robles, Arxy Hernandez, Ryan Burrowes, Randel Mondesi, and Juan Oviedo
