Tending to the Farm: Montgomery and Colás stand out

This series will recap the performances of each White Sox minor league affiliate throughout the previous week. Here is the 19th installment of the 2022 season.

Charlotte Knights (43-68)

Weekly Record: 3-3

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs welcomed the Knights to Coca-Cola Park last week. Charlotte started the series well, taking three of the first four before dropping the final two and ending with a series split. The Knights occupy last place and are 19 games back in the International League East Division.

The Knights offense had issues last week with IronPigs pitching. Charlotte had a .216/.296/.279 slash line and a .575 OPS. They also scored 18 runs, had 41 hits in 190 at-bats, six doubles, no triples, two home runs, 17 walks to 51 strikeouts, and went 4-for-9 on stolen bases. Complete season totals for the Knights offense can be found here.

Charlotte’s pitching staff had an improved line from the previous week. The Knights had a team ERA of 4.24, a 1.51 WHIP, and a .229 Batting Average Against. They also allowed 24 runs (24 earned), 44 hits to 51 innings pitched, 33 walks to 53 strikeouts, hit one batter and allowed six home runs. Andrew Perez: Andrew Perez was dominant for the Knights last week. The 25 year-old lefty had three appearances and threw three innings allowing no hits, no walks, no runs, struck out six, and had a .000 Batting Average Against and a .000 WHIP.

Birmingham Barons (47-61)

Weekly Record: 1-5
First Half: 31-38
Second Half: 16-23

The Barons went to Pensacola to take on the Blue Wahoos last week, and things didn’t go well for the Birmingham club. The Barons dropped five of six games in the series, some of which in heartbreaking walk-off fashion. The Barons are in third place and six games back in the second half in the Southern League North Division.

The Barons were only able to marginally improve upon their production from the previous week. Birmingham slashed .234/.300/.453 for a .753 OPS. Additionally, they scored 30 runs, had 50 hits in 214 at-bats, 11 doubles, no triples, 12 home runs, 16 walks to 71 strikeouts, and went 9-for-11 on stolen bases. The Barons pitching staff followed up their rough previous week with a slightly less but still rough week against the Blue Wahoos. Birmingham left Florida with a 5.23 team ERA, a 1.63 WHIP, and a .272 Batting Average Against. The Barons also allowed 41 runs (31 earned), 56 hits to 53.1 innings pitched, 31 walks to 54 strikeouts, hit seven batters and allowed six home runs. Oscar Colás: If you haven’t been paying attention, Oscar Colás is still wrecking the Southern League. The 23 year-old outfielder slashed .391/.481/.783 for a 1.264 OPS, hit three home runs, five RBI, scored five runs, and had nine hits in 23 at-bats.

Winston-Salem Dash (52-56)

Weekly Record: 3-3
First Half: 33-33
Second Half: 19-23

The Dash had the pleasure of hosting the Bowling Green Hot Rods all of last week. Winston-Salem played the Hot Rods tough, winning three in a row, but were only able to work a series split. The Dash are in fourth place and 10 games back in the second half in the South Atlantic League South Division.

The Dash offense was mostly unspectacular once again, but had their moments against Bowling Green. Winston-Salem slashed .248/.307/.406 for a .713 OPS. The Dash also scored 27 runs, had 50 hits in 202 at-bats, 10 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 14 walks to 44 strikeouts, and went 2-for-5 on stolen bases. After a marvelous previous week, the Winston-Salem pitching staff endured some struggles against the tough Hot Rods lineup. The Dash had a team ERA of 4.83, a 1.26 WHIP, and a .219 Batting Average Against. The Dash also allowed 30 runs (29 earned) on 43 hits over 54 innings, 25 walks to 57 strikeouts, hitting three batters and allowed eight home runs. Colson Montgomery: Colson Montgomery had a fantastic week for the Dash. The 20 year-old slashed .462/.563/.846 for a 1.409 OPS, hitting two doubles, one home run, two RBI, scored four runs, and had six hits in 13 at-bats.

Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (48-60)

Weekly Record: 2-4
First Half: 26-40
Second Half: 22-20

The Cannon Ballers had the Salem Red Sox in town to play some baseball games last week. Kannapolis couldn’t get much going in their favor however as they dropped four of six games in the series. Kannapolis is in third place and three and a half games back in the second half in the Carolina League South Division.

Kannapolis had a tough time on offense last week against the Salem pitching staff. The Ballers concluded the series with a .219/.284/.313 slash line for a .597 OPS. Kannapolis also scored 24 runs, had 42 hits in 192 at-bats, seven doubles, one triple, three home runs, 15 walks to 55 strikeouts, and went 2-for-5 on stolen bases. Things didn’t go much better for the Kannapolis pitching staff against the Red Sox lineup last week. The Cannon Ballers posted a team ERA of 5.89, a 1.78 WHIP, and a .280 Batting Average Against. Additionally, the staff allowed 42 runs (36 earned) on 60 hits over 55 innings, issuing 38 walks against 57 strikeouts, while hitting two batters and allowing six home runs. Wes Kath: Wes Kath was the best performer last week for the Ballers. The recently turned 20 year-old slashed .313/.476/.563 for a 1.039 OPS, hitting one double, one home run, three RBI, scored four runs, and had five hits in 16 at-bats.

ACL White Sox (21-27)

Weekly Record: 23

The Romy Gonzalez-less Arizona club couldn’t keep up last week’s momentum, dropping three of five last week. The ACL White Sox are tied for last place and 10 games back in the ACL West.

After a very solid previous week, the struggles returned for the ACL White Sox offense. The club hit .231/.328/.300 for a .628 OPS. Additionally, the ACL White Sox scored 17 runs, had 37 hits in 160 at-bats, five doubles, no triples, two home runs, 19 walks to 51 strikeouts, and went 6-for-6 on stolen bases. After two very good weeks, the ACL White Sox pitching staff endured a minor setback last week. The chuckers ended the week with a team ERA of 4.29, a 1.50 WHIP, and a .276 Batting Average Against. In addition, the staff was charged with 20 earned runs (22 runs allowed), 43 hits in 42 innings pitched, 20 walks to 52 strikeouts, hit no batters, and allowed five home runs. Luis Pineda: Luis Pineda had a very productive week at the plate for the ACL White Sox. The 20-year-old slashed .400/.500/.500 for an even 1.000 OPS, hitting one double, four RBI, scored one run, and had four hits in 10 at-bats.

Honorable Mentions: Emerson Talavera and Tristan Stivors

DSL White Sox (27-24)

Weekly Record: 4-1

The DSL White Sox were outstanding last week, securing four out of a possible five wins. The DSL Sox are in fourth place and six games back in the DSL San Pedro Division.

The offense had similar but slightly better production from the previous week The White Sox hit .287/.350/.411 for a .761 OPS. In addition, the club scored 24 runs, had 37 hits in 129 at-bats, five doubles, one triple, three home runs, nine walks to 24 strikeouts, and went 1-for-4 on stolen bases. Once again the DSL White Sox pitching staff improved from the previous week. The staff held a team ERA of 3.18, a 1.21 WHIP, and a .264 Batting Average Against. The DSL crew also allowed 12 earned runs to 17 runs allowed, 33 hits to 34 innings pitched, eight walks to 41 strikeouts, hit three batters, and allowed three home runs. Godwin Bennett: Godwin Bennett was outstanding at the plate for the DSL White Sox last week. The 19-year-old slashed .385/.438/.769 for a 1.207 OPS, hitting two doubles, one home run, seven RBI, scored five runs, and had five hits in 13 at-bats.

  1. Every Tuesday morning I wait impatiently for the Minor Keys…and every Tuesday afternoon I remind my idiotic self that the minor leagues don’t play on Mondays anymore.
