Charlotte 6, Gwinnett 2
Former top prospect Erik Johnson continued his comeback quest by dominating the Braves over his five innings of work. Johnson touched 95 while only allowing one run, four hits, no walks and striking out four. The Knights offense showed no mercy to former Charlotte pitcher Chien-Ming Wang, pounding twelve hits and scoring six runs. Second basemen Carlos Sanchez led the charge, going 3-4 with two doubles which raised his average on the season to a absurd .485/.500/.606. Matt Davidson blasted his second home run of the season and Trayce Thompson went 1-4 and now has had a hit in the first ten games of the year.
Birmingham 11, Chattanooga 5 (Game 1)
Tyler Danish was roughed up for five runs and nine hits over his five innings, but he did strike out six batters. Danish gave up two home runs in his outing, which is concerning because he only allowed seven home runs in all his appearance in the 2014 season. It is worth noting that Danish is one of the youngest players in the entire league, so there is room for a learning curve. Despite all that, Danish still received the win because the Barons offense busted out for eleven runs on sixteen hits. The top of the Birmingham lineup was lethal, Tim Anderson went 2-5, Jacob May went 3-4, and Courtney Hawkins went 2-4 with a double and a home run. Joey DeMichele also collected three hits and Martin Medina went 2-3 with a walk.
Chattanooga 1, Birmingham 0 (Game 2)
The second game of the doubleheader was a pitchers duel with both offenses struggling to get runners on base. Barons started Junior Guerra allowed the only run of the evening during his 3.2 innings, while Nolan Sanburn and Raul Fernandez were perfect in their relief appearances. Tim Anderson went 1-4, but struck out three times. Adrian Nieto had a perfect day at the dish, going 1-1 with two walks.
Myrtle Beach 4, Winston-Salem 1 (Game 1)
The Dash were two-hit by Pelican pitching, as Adam Engel and Jake Peter‘s singles was the only offense they could muster. Winston-Salem starter Robinson Leyer allowed four runs during his 5.1 innings, but did strike out six while walking none. Reliever Tyler Barnette did not allow a hit or a run during his 1.2 innings of work.
Myrtle Beach 8, Winston-Salem 4 (Game 2)
Dash pitchers Sean Hagan, Brad Goldberg, and Jose Brito could not contain the Pelican offense as the Dash dropped game two of the doubleheader. The Winston-Salem offense was a bit more lively however, as Adam Engel went 2-4 with a double and his 6th stolen base and Keenyn Walker went 2-3.
Kannapolis 10, Hickory 9
The Intimidators held off a late rally and won a high octane affair as both lineups combined for 30 hits. Kannapolis starter Thad Lowry scattered eight hits over six innings, allowing four runs (three earned), while striking out six and walking none. Shortshop Eddy Alvarez tripled and walked in a 2-4 effort, while Tyler Williams and Brett Austin had three hit days.
