Columbus 2, Charlotte 0
Well, someone put out the Carlos Sanchez fire as the second baseman went 0-4 in a loss where most Knights couldn’t reach base. Trayce Thompson, Dan Black, Kevan Smith, Matt Davidson and Leury Garcia provided all five of the team’s hits – with only Thompson getting an extra-base hit (a double). A positive that can be drawn from the offense is that other than Matt Tuiasosopo, who took home a golden sombrero, no one struck out more than three times.
Starter Kyle Drabek looks like he might have a future as the next White Sox reclamation project as the former top prospect went six innings and only gave up one run on two hits while striking out eight and walking two. Drabek pitched a fantastic game and will have to simply settle for Quintana-esque luck when it comes to run support some nights.
Montgomery 7, Birmingham 0
The Barons struck out 10 times and only had three hits, with Adrian Nieto and Jacob May each chipping in a double.
The pitching was equally bad from starter Tony Bucciferro and Nolan Sanburn. Tyler Barnette was able to throw three scoreless frames with three strike outs, but otherwise it was a lackluster night for Birmingham.
Winston-Salem 3, Frederick 2 (SUSPENDED)
Jake Cose and Andre Wheeler didn’t turn in any stellar pitching performances – Cose (on his first appearance since 2013 after back surgery) allowing six runners in three innings and striking out two while Wheeler has allowed a solo-shot home run and three hits in one inning of work. So far Adam Engel has a homer while Trey Michalczewski, Omar Narvaez and Chris Jacobs have the other three hits for the Dash, with Jacobs having two-RBI triple.
The Dash will complete their game on Thursday.
West Virginia 4, Kannapolis 2
Louie Lechich had a home run, Mason Robbins had a double and Eddy Alvarez had an RBI despite going 0-4. Michael Suiter, Christian Stringer and Tyler Williams all chipped in singles of their own.
More importantly, Spencer Adams had a good six-inning outing where he struck out four, had no walks and allowed only two runs on three hits. Reports are that Adams was topping out at 95 MPH, a very welcome sign after his fastball was sitting in the high-80s/low-90s the past couple starts. If Adams can hit his stride it’d be a huge boon to the Intimidators rotation.
