Charlotte 6, Toledo 4
Hot-hitting Dan Black blasted a 8th inning grand slam to lift the Knights past the Toledo Mudhens on Sunday. Black is now hitting a ridiculous .324/.452/.581 on the season and has more walks (21) than strikeouts (18). Erik Johnson started the game and had an erratic line, he allowed four runs on four walks and seven hits but struck out seven, which was a season high for him. The Charlotte bullpen was solid in relief, Jarrett Casey pitched two perfect innings and Daniel Webb threw two scoreless innings to earn the save.
Birmingham 10, Montgomery 4
The Montgomery Biscuits and the town of Montgomery train system are probably very happy to see the Barons leave town. The day after Tim Anderson hit for the cycle, it was Courtney Hawkins turn to terrorize the Biscuits. Hawkins crushed a two-run home run that hit a passing train…seriously. Hawkins went 2-3 with a double, the aforementioned train homer, and two walks to raise his average to .255 on the season. The rest of the Barons offense was dialed as well as Christian Marrero went 4-5 with a double and Danny Hayes went 2-5 with a double and a home run. 20 year-old starter Tyler Danish continues to impress, he struck out six over his 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk. Danish has a 2.76 ERA with 34 strikeouts and only 9 walks over his 32.2 innings this season.
Myrtle Beach 4, Winston-Salem 3
The Dash were foiled by the first place Pelicans, dropping a 4-3 Sunday night home game. Adam Engel and Jake Peter went 1-4 and Nolan Early went 2-3 with a double. Starter Robinson Leyer allowed two earned runs over his five innings of work, striking out one and walking two. Reliever Brad Goldberg threw two perfect innings, striking out three.
Lexington 11, Kannapolis 7
Starter Yency Almonte could not get out of the first inning, allowing 6 runs (5 earned) on four hits and two walks. The Intimidators offense responded well, but ultimately the rally fell short. Eddy Alvarez went 1-3 with three walks to increase his OBP to .421, which is good for 3rd best in the South Atlantic League. Second baseman Christian Stringer went 2-3 with a triple and a walk and outfielder Louie Lechich went 2-4 with a double and a walk.
