There were three minor league All Star games last night involving White Sox prospects, in addition to some regular games. Tim Anderson highlighted the night with an MVP performances in the Southern League midseason classic. Oh and these rookie league teams look like they will be very fun to watch this summer…
Southern League (AA Birmingham): North All Stars 9, South All Stars 0
Anderson had a big day at a big showcase, recording a triple and a double in three trips from the leadoff spot for the North team en route to his trophy bat. He also scored and knocked in a run to help lead his team to the decisive win. Catcher Adrian Nieto also had a nice game, with a double and a single in his two plate appearances. Joey DeMichele started at second batting ninth and had a tough day, drawing the silver sombrero but adding a walk. On the mound, Frankie Montas faced just two batters, one of whom got a hit, but he also hit 100 mph on the stadium radar gun.
Carolina – California Leagues (A+ Winston-Salem): California League 9, Carolina League 2
Three members of the Dash saw action out west. Omar Narvaez was the only hitter and had the best day of the three, hitting a double in two at-bats. James Dykstra pitched the full 6th inning and got hit around a bit: 4 hits, 3 runs (2 earned), no walks or strikeouts. Matt Heidenreich closed for the Carolina League, getting one out and giving up one walk. Trey Michaczewski was on the team, but couldn’t play as he continues to suffer from a back injury.
South Atlantic League (A Kannapolis): North All Stars 7, South All Stars 5
A pair of Intimidators’ hitters played in this one, both from the bench. Eddy Alvarez had a hit in two at bats while playing second (where he also made an error). Brett Austin was the middle-innings catcher and also singled in his two trip, and struck out in the other.
Syracuse 4, Charlotte 3
Micah Johnson continues to hit and run, going 2-5 and stealing his 11th and 12th bases on the year. Matt Davidson had a 3-hit day (all singles), and Trayce Thompson has been hitting very well in June (.887 OPS) as he registered a double and a single in four at-bats (with a strikeout). Shawn Haviland was pretty good in his start, allowing two earned runs (plus on UER) over 6 innings on 7 hits (and no walks). The Knights still cling to a narrow half-game lead in their division despite two straight 1-run losses, as they try to make the postseason.
Great Falls 13, Helena 5
The Voyagers have proven to be an offensive juggernaut in the early going as they won this one in a rout. Jake Jarvis, Antonio Rodriguez and Frank Califano all recorded three-hit days, with the first two each hitting their first home runs of the season. Their averages so far are .389, .333 and .455 respectively in the early going. Casey Schroeder had a pair of doubles and Louis Silverio added the team’s third long ball of the game. The pitching wasn’t quite as strong, though Zack Erwin had a nice pro debut (2.1 scoreless innings, 2 hits, no walks, 2 strikeouts) and Braulio Ortiz whiffed four in his pair of rehab innings.
AZL White Sox 10, AZL Mariners 0
The other rookie league team also won big and scored in double digits. 2015 draftees Daniel Mendick and Tyler Sullivan each recorded three hits, with Mendick’s including a home run. Micker Adolfo had a triple and a single (and a strikeout) in five PA as he continues his strong start. On the mound, Jesse Crain (who is 10-15 years older than his current teammates) threw a scoreless inning of rehab. Chris Comito, the overslot 15th round pick, had a pair of K’s in a pair of innings.
DSL Orioles 5, DSL White Sox 1
Maiker Feliz went 1-4 and is hitting .361 so far in the Dominican this year, though he did strike out twice in this one. Luis Castillo played in the game but was immediately transfered to the AZL White Sox after the contest, so watch for him state-side soon.
