Charlotte 2, Norfolk 0
The Charlotte Knights won their third straight game and moved into first place of their division entering into their All-Star Break. Pitchers Scott Carroll, Matt Albers, and Junior Guerra combined to throw a five-hit shutout and the offense manufactured a couple of runs to earn the win. Micah Johnson continues to play well, as he went 2-5 with a double and two stolen bases and is hitting .349 over his past ten contests. The Knights were able to swipe five bags in total as Norfolk had no answer for their running game.
Birmingham 3, Jackson 0
The Barons followed the Knights lead and also used three pitchers to toss a shutout on Sunday. Tony Bucciferro, Tyler Barnette, and J.B. Wendelken combined to only allow eight hits to help the Barons win their fifth straight game. Wendelken was particularly impressive, as he threw two perfect innings and struck out five to slam the door shut for the his fourth save. Leadoff man Tim Anderson went 1-4 and stole his Southern League leading 30th bag of the season. First baseman Chris Jacobs went 1-2 with two walks and outfielder Marcus Lemon went 3-4 to pace the Barons offense.
Potomac 8, Winston-Salem 2
Adam Engel and Trey Michalczewski had excellent games at the plate but the Dash dropped the contest to the Potomac Nationals. Engel went 2-4 with a double and his 32nd stolen base of the season. Engel’s theft tied him for the Carolina League lead in stolen bases. Michalczewski went 2-3 with a double, RBI, and walk, but he did commit a field error. Starter Brandon Brennan pitched well, but was let down his defense as he allowed five runs (two earned) over 6.2 innings of work.
Kannapolis 12, Charleston 2
The Intimidators pounded the Charleston RiverDogs thanks to an excellent start from Spencer Adams and a balanced offensive attack. Adams, who struggled mightily earlier in the season, has been lights out recently as he has only allowed three runs and one walk over his past 18.1 innings. Perhaps he has been listening to his pitching coach, but whatever the reason, Adams cruised during his 5.2 innings and earned the win.
Offensively, six Intimidators collected two hits on the evening as they pounded out fourteen hits as a team. Catcher Brett Austin went 2-5 with a double a drove in three runs and outfielder Mason Robbins went 2-4 with a double, a walk, and scored three runs.
Great Falls 11, Ogden 2
The vaunted Voyagers offense absolutely pummeled the Ogden Raptors on Sunday, as they scored eleven runs on seventeen hits. Outfielder Antonio Rodriguez reached base in all five of his plate appearances, as he went 4-4 with a walk. Outfielder Landon Lassiter went 3-4 with a walk and a stolen base out of the lead-off spot. Lassiter has been hot recently, going 6-11 with a home run and four RBI’s over his past three games. Second baseman Jake Jarvis hit his third home run of the young season, the power display is great to see as Jarvis did not hit a home run over his 29 games last season. Starter Evin Einhardt earned the win to help the Voyagers stay on top of the North Division standings for the Pioneer League.
AZL Cubs 1, AZL White Sox 0
The Arizona League White Sox had eight hits, but could not push a run across the plate as they were nipped by the AZL Cubs. Starter Yosmer Solorzano was the tough luck loser as he pitched seven innings, only allowing one run on four hits. Solorzano, only 18 years-old, has been very impressive this season as he had a 2.17 ERA and has only allowed 22 hits over his 29 innings of work. Outfielder Jordan Yallen went 2-3, Tyler Sullivan went 1-2 with a walk, and Micker Adolfo had a hit in the loss.
