Birmingham 5, Mississippi 4
Matt Heidenreich‘s 2015 Birmingham debut was a mixed bag as he struck out seven (good) but also allowed four runs on eight hits (not so good). Luckily for Heidenreich and the Barons, they have Tim Anderson on the squad. Anderson finished a triple shy of the cycle in a 3-5 night that included a solo home run off a 98 MPH fastball. Anderson is hitting .394/.452/.576 in the month of August and if you’d like to hear from the man himself, check out FutureSox’s recent interview with him. Reliever Robinson Leyer earned the win with two perfect innings and Peter Tago took his fifth save of the season.
Myrtle Beach 4, Winston-Salem 1 (game 1)
The Dash were held to three hits and starter Yency Almonte allowed three runs over his 6.2 innings as the Dash dropped game one of a double header to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Trey Michalczewski went 1-3 and Nolan Earley went 1-2 with a stolen base.
Myrtle Beach 4, Winston-Salem 2 (game 2, 9 innings)
The Dash lost game two of the double header in extra innings despite outhitting Myrtle Beach 10 to 3. Trey Michalczewski went 2-5 with two doubles while Keon Barnum, Nick Basto, and Nolan Earley had two hits as well. Andre Wheeler started the game and did not allow a hit or an earned run, but two walks came around to score on errors. Matt Cooper relieved Wheeler and tossed three shutout innings which extended his scoreless streak to 20 innings dating back to his time with the Intimidators. With the loss, the Dash dropped out of first place in their division for the first time in 55 days. However, they are still 2.5 games ahead of the Salem Red Sox for the final playoff spot.
Asheville 6, Kannapolis 0
Starter Luis Martinez had an excellent outing as he only allowed two hits and one run over 5.1 innings. Unfortunately for Martinez, the Kannapolis offense could not get on the board and only had three hits all game. Reliever David Trexler was blasted for for five runs over 2.2 innings.
Great Falls 2, Grand Junction 1
Starter Lucas Shearrow pitched five scoreless innings to lead the Voyagers to a victory over the Grand Junction Rockies. Dante Flores, Jake Jarvis, and Ryan Jones all collected two hits to lead the offense and Alex Katz threw two perfect innings to nail down his second save.
