The combo of Dayan Viciedo and Kevan Smith proved too much for the Norfolk Tides, as both Viciedo and Smith went yard. Jason Coats, batting leadoff, padded his slugging percentage with a pair of doubles in five PAs. Matt Davidson, looking to remain above .200 for the season, went 1-4 with a double and raised his average to .203.
Led by starter Hector Noesi, the pitching proved quite strong in this game. Noesi set the tone with a game score of 75 – 7 IP, 2 H, R, BB, 7 SO. While Noesi’s game is well-established – innings eater/emergency starter – Zach Phillips and Junior Guerra, less established (fringy) pitchers, both struck out three in an inning of work as each allowed a base hit. Phillips is interesting, if only because he’s left-handed and has put up some nice numbers (64 Ks in 54 IP to 19 BBs, 2.83 ERA).
The Barons won an extra-inning affair against the Lookouts. They were led, of course, by SS Tim Anderson. Anderson had yet another multi-hit game – this time he had three hits, including a double (21) and a triple (12). He also stole his 49th bag of the season – an impressive total. Even with just five homers, Anderson’s XBH output for the season is very encouraging especially considering how active he has been on the basepaths and playing at shortstop for most of the season. He does, however, need to continue to work on his approach and pitch selection. But clearly Anderson is extremely gifted with elite hand-eye coordination and bat-to-ball skills. Danny Hayes, like Anderson, had three hits in this game to go along with an RBI and a triple (third of the season). Nick Delmonico doubled (22) en-route to a two-RBI performance with a walk and a strikeout.
Tim Crabbe got the start for the Barons, filling in for Frankie Montas (September call-up) and performed very well. He went four innings, striking out four while allowing an unearned run and three hits (no walks). Equipped with a solid average curveball, Crabbe, 27, has excelled with the Barons in relief and spot start appearances (30 Ks in 33IP, .220 AVG against, 2.70 ERA). Nolan Sanburn got shelled in an inning and two thirds of work, allowing three earned, four base-runners (two hits, walks), but did manage to strike out three as he was recently activated off of the DL. Peter Tago (2.04 ERA), a former starter and first round pick with the Rockies, worked three innings of relief and stymied the Lookouts, allowing just one walk and nothing else in 3.1 IP while striking out three.
