Scouting Report

Though fellow pitchers Carlos Rodon and Spencer Adams garnered more attention from the 2014 draft (with good reason), there was also a lot to like with this third rounder signed for slightly over slot value ($760,000 vs. $726,000 slot). Baseball America and MLB Pipeline had him ranked just inside their top 100 draft prospects. In his pro debut, the southpaw saw only brief action with Great Falls.

The lefty skipped Kannapolis and went to High-A Winston-Salem to begin 2015, and was doing pretty well through nine starts (3.14 ERA, 16 BB, 39 K in 51.2 IP) before disaster struck in his tenth start. He was removed from the game on May 31, and underwent his second Tommy John surgery in June (his first was in 2012 in college). Missing the rest of that season and all of 2016 (other than rehab in fall instructs), Fry returned in 2017 at Double-A Birmingham as a re-tooled reliever. After looking good there (7.1 H/9, 10.3 K/9), though with some control issues (4.8 BB/9), he got a surprising call-up to the big leagues for 11 games where he had huge issues with command.

Fry’s package of pitches has changed substantially since returning, so throw out any reports you may have had previously. The current version of Fry shows a slightly higher velocity fastball, sitting 93-95 with some fade. The slider is gone in favor of a cutter in the upper 80s that moves like a cut-slider. His upper 70s curve is his best offspeed offering. There’s also a low 80s change-up that is only rarely used in his repertoire.
