Scouting Report
Stiever led the Big Ten in strikeouts as a junior for Indiana. Coming out of the state of Wisconsin as a prep, he was named First Team All-State as a pitcher and as a WR/DB in football as well. The former Hoosier only logged 28 innings for Great Falls in his draft year. Stiever posted an ERA of 4.14 with 39 K and 9 BB and a WHIP of 1.14.
He had a breakout year in his first full season of pro ball. He had a 4.74 ERA for Low-A Kannapolis, but 77 strikeouts against 14 walks in 74 innings. Similar stats led to a better ERA (2.15) with High-A Winston-Salem. Stiever soared up prospect rankings with 77 strikeouts, 13 walks and 56 hits allowed in 71 innings.
In 2020, Stiever was at the alternate site in Schaumburg. He made his MLB debut in September despite not pitching above A ball. He showed his stuff can play against MLB hitters. However, in his second start he gave up four home runs, showing he was still a work in progress.
Stiever throws his 60-grade fastball in the 91-96 mph range and it shows good downhill plane with run and sink. He also has an advanced feel for a 55-grade curveball that is of the spike variety. The righty also throws an average changeup that should help keep lefties honest at the dish. Stiever has a competitive mentality and has been described as a bulldog on the mound. He should remain in the starting rotation despite his smaller build in relation to typical starters. Stiever has a high floor of being a back end starter in the big leagues with the upside to be more than that.
Major League Outlook: No. 3/4 starter
