Scouting Report

When Sosa signed for $350,000 in 2016, Ben Badler of Baseball America noted that some evaluators thought Sosa was one of the best hitters to come out of Venezuela that year. Unlike most international amateurs that report to the Dominican Summer League, Sosa was sent to the Low-Rookie affiliate in the AZL as a 17-year-old. The shortstop held his own there in 42 games. He posted a .688 OPS with 24 strikeouts and 14 walks.

Sosa went to a the more advanced Pioneer League as an 18-year-old in his second season. He hit .293/.317/.406 with only his walk rate dipping from the previous season.

His first full season assignment came in 2019 with Kannapolis and it did not go as well. He hit .251/.292/.371. Sosa has shown good contact rate and modest power, but doesn’t walk enough to make up for a lack of other standout offensive tools. He has a simple, fluid swing that should allow him to hit for average.

He’s a below-average runner, which has caused some scouts to believe he will eventually move away from shortstop. He does possess above-average or better hands and average arm strength.

Major League Outlook: Utility infielder
