Scouting Report
Curbelo jumped straight to No. 7 on FutureSox’s rankings after getting drafted, which speaks to both the system at the time and the excitement around him when he was drafted. Curbelo was MLB’s 104th ranked prospect entering the draft and seen as a tough sign. He was committed to the University of Miami, but the Sox inked him for a whopping $700,000 (slot value was $286,700).
In his pro debut in the AZL, he played a mix of both middle infield positions and posted a .226/.303/.326 line as an 18-year-old. He was sidelined with a meniscus tear in 2017, limiting him to three games. When he was healthy in 2018, he moved to full season ball with Kannapolis. He struggled with the jump at 20 years old (.237/.282/.338). His 2019 was a disaster. His numbers plummeted with Kannapolis in 64 games (.169/.216/.287) before getting send back to rookie ball.
He has some power for a middle infielder power, but his contact rate hasn’t been good enough. Curbelo was always going to be a project and so far he hasn’t lived up to hopes.
