Scouting Report
Jones was a big stuff, no control guy that eventually figured it out enough to carve out an MLB career. With a mid 90s fastball and a devastating curveball the expectation to be an impact reliever has always been there for Jones. The Sox gave him some starts as a pro because he needed the work, but his future was always as a reliever. He put up ridiculous strikeout numbers for Kannapolis in parts of ’08 and ’09, but that disappeared in the high minors. Jones had struggled to repeat his delivery, resulting in the lack of command.
Health is another concern for Jones, who missed time in 2009 with a strained shoulder. Scouts have complained about his arm action and delivery. In Jones’ Double-A debut in 2011 he was inconsistent, but found a groove in the middle of the season. He managed to make the White Sox roster out of spring training in 2012 and took advantage to the surprise of many, but the stuff has always been there.
Jones pitched eight straight years for the White Sox from 2012-2019, including a standout 2016 season, but rarely stayed healthy for a full season and was inconsistent most years when healthy.
